There’s a trend going on right and left in support of natalism. What is natalism, you may ask?
Natalism is a belief system that emphasizes the importance of having children and considers high birth rates to be beneficial for society.
I’m very early in my thinking about this trend. The hair on the back of my neck is telling me it’s problematic.
I’ll have more to say about it later maybe, but right now I just want to observe that The Bulwark has one woman and two or three men who anchor it. Pod Save America has four men who anchor it. I’ve heard natalist-positive attitudes expressed on both shows.
Scott Galloway proudly proclaims he’s a natalist.
Heather Cox Richardson is a phenom and so is Ruth Bin Ghiat, but neither of them wander anywhere close to the shores of natalism.
Meanwhile almost all of the wars in the world have been caused by a very small number of very greedy men.
And now small groups of very greedy men look like they’re hankering for more war.
Why the fuck would any woman want to have children in a time of impending war?
Maybe we need more balance in the system. Maybe we need a world that is healthy to bring children into.
