Hey Chuck! I've got a letter for ya [1]

I am an old protester. In my teenage years I protested the NRA, Rocky Flats Nuclear Weapons Plant, (no, I didn’t sit on the tracks because my parents said they wouldn’t bail me out of jail, even if it was my money), etc.
Ramping up for sustained protests, I’ve been making my kit, etc. Things have changed a little (we didn’t have cell phones back then) and other things have stayed the same.
I haven’t done this for a long time. But what I have done in the interim, especially as my health issues blossomed, is write letters. At one point I joked that I wrote so often that if I missed a week the people in the office of my Rep. might call to check on me.
In my diary Updated x4 : 20 armed agents burst into home of US citizen & her daughters in the early morning, I mentioned in the comments that I have written to both my Democratic Senators (because I now live in Massachusetts) to express my disappointment in Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, as he seems not to be up for the fight.

Using this Youtube short as a guide I have begun suggesting to them that they should start looking at removing Schumer as minority leader. I even suggested replacements like Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Senators Warren or Markey because they have been fighting, and junior Senator Adam Schiff, to name a few.
Shortly I will be writing an old fashioned paper letter to Senator Schumer stating that he isn’t up for this fight and his tepid “strongly worded letters,” especially against a man who won’t even abide by SCOTUS decisions, that it’s time to let younger people LEAD.
I will also make 2 copies of my letter to him and send them to Senators Warren and Markey. With the old fashioned cc: Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Ed Markey on the bottom after my signature.
Why an old fashion paper letter? Because now in the time of email, paper letters are noticed. Even paper greeting cards, which I’ve been sending for two years now, are noticed and thought about.
While Chuck Schumer may not read them, paper creates a pile that is hard to dismiss. (Just like when we sent thank you bouquets to Nancy Pelosi, it gained attention.)
Paper also takes more time than an email. That in and of itself gains attention.
“Great thought but I don’t have any Democratic Senators to encourage (and cc) where I live.” Then pick two that have been fighting and cc them. Make sure you add a cover letter to let them know why they are getting a cc of your letter to Schumer.
We have an opportunity here, but Dems are polling in numbers under Trump. Independents, young liberals, old liberals, even Never Trumpers want Dems to fight and I will be damned if I don’t do everything in my power to praise the ones who are fighting and pressure the ones who aren’t into either stepping aside and to let someone more capable of engaging in the fight we MUST have, OR joining the fight in with the intensity this moment in our history calls for. WE need to save our Democratic Republic.
And to borrow a phrase from someone more famous than I, “we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.”
Will it work? I have no idea, but doing this is better than doing what we have been doing — because Schumer isn’t listening. And it just might, by showing Schumer directly that we are displeased with him and showing other Senators we have their back if they move to remove him in his leadership position, change this impotent situation.
Here is a template on how to write a paper letter to Senators
Chris Smith
555 Main Street
Opinionville, ME 01112 June 25, 2017 The Honorable Barbara Reynolds
Room 202, Senate Office Building
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510 Dear Senator Reynolds: Paragraph 1 – Introduce the writer and state the purpose of the letter. Paragraph 2 – State the position supported. Use supporting examples and facts. Paragraph 3 – Describe any action requested. Ask for the senator to respond saying what he/she intends to do. Sincerely yours, Chris Smith — from AAFCS

Don’t forget to sign it. After “Sincerely” or “Sincerely yours” leave three (I’m old, all I can think of here is “carriage returns”) . . . hit enter/return 3 times then type out your name. Sign your name above the printed version of your name.
(I discovered when I had to teach my then 24 year old son how to write a check for his first apartment, that this was no longer taught in schools. So now I don’t automatically think younger generations have this knowledge.) Also How to address and envelope and don’t forget to put a stamp on it before you put it in the mailbox.
Senator Chuck Schumer’s address is:
322 Hart Senate Office Building
Washington, D.C. 20510
