A Tsunami of Guilt and Remorse is About to Hit GOP Supporters– Don't Let them Duck Responsibility [1]

When a huge mass of people realize they were wrong to support a leader who was never worthy of their support, how will they deal with it?
And how can we compassionately but firmly force them out of their predictable coming efforts at denial.
There will be a great media-created fog designed to allow them to obscure the truth and permit them to duck responsibility.
Let us list some of the questions that the more honorable right-wing folks might eventually ask themselves:
How could I have been so ignorant?
How could I have been so wrong?
How could I have been so easily manipulated?
How could I have fallen for the con man’s pitch?
How was I so easily corrupted?
How were my Christian values and God’s moral laws so easily and enthusiastically ignored and transgressed?
What made me so easily sell out to false promises of economic gain for my tribe, class, or group?
Why was I so desperate to be called Great by someone so untrustworthy?
P. T. Barnam, the great American showman, said, “There is a sucker born every minute.” He may have got the timing wrong. There is more likely ”a sucker born every second.”
The go to justification that I have heard repeatedly from those who embraced wrong and followed the crowd was “everyone did it” or “everyone believed it.” My minister believed it. My legislator believed it. The rich, smart people believed it. Fox News believed it.
If I had terrible judgment, so did everyone else that I knew, liked, and trusted. No one can blame me.
Half of the nation can’t be wrong or guilty or ignorant. We have banned together in our denial. So perhaps we can go burrow into our favorite media holes, continue on, and pretend it is not happening or never happened.
I can hear them now:
“Don’t worry.” The apologists and well-paid liars at “Fox News will tell us what to do, and what to think.” They will give us good excuses. They will save us and give us redemption. They have become our church anyway – the people who tell us we are wonderful, saved, and destined for greatness. Our right-wing Christian Nationalist minister takes his orders from Fox and the GOP anyway. They will give us reasons to justify all our confusion, bad judgement, and hatred of outsiders.
After all, when Sadam was shown to have no WMDs (the false reason for the Iraq war), we were told the WMDs were shipped to Syria or that “at least Sadam is gone.” We kept our pride based on these flimsy or false excuses. We were not wrong to support Bush, his oil company friends, the rah-rah spirit of the mainstream and right-wing media, and his lies about the war.
Let’s look forward and not back. Case closed. Time to move on.
But I suspect that the political, economic, and emotional damage caused by the President will be so extreme and far reaching that ignoring it will be near impossible.
Recession, inflation, stock market losses, eminent collapse of Medicare and Social Security, loss of allies throughout the world, failing farmers, attacks on judges and universities, collapse of human rights, civil rights, and personal freedom of expression – these are only the beginning.
Making America Great Again actually meant making citizens guiltier, more uninformed, poorer, more hateful, and more afraid.
The important thing may be for those opposing the right-wing to mount powerful personal and media campaigns to counter the flurry of excuses for the extreme failure of GOP leadership.
We cannot afford to let “mistakes were made” and “the intelligence was flawed” statements be repeated by right-wing and corporate media as if no one was responsible for the GOP-sponsored disaster (like the Iraq war).
It is time to help them look at the failure of the GOP leadership squarely and honestly, and make sure their supporters cannot duck, bob, weave, avoid, deny, and hide from the painful truth.
We must be prepared to counter the misinformation in every way possible. The challenge is here today. The excuse mill is churning.
