Mr. Brillig and I went to the movies last Friday night. Post-pandemic I can count on probably one hand the number of movies we’ve seen at an ACTUAL movie theater and not our living room, but this one we really wanted to see on the big screen. The movie is Sinners, which was written, directed and co-produced by Ryan Coogler. We are SO glad we saw it where we did (a local IMAX screen) and are hoping to see it again before it leaves, something we don’t ever do.

The film was AMAZING- the audience clapped when it ended. It’s cinematographically a masterpiece, shot on actual not digital film and alternating aspect ratios (for a technical look at the film and how it differs depending on where you view it, here’s a link you can watch even if you haven’t seen the film yet). The acting was incredible and due to actor Michael B. Jordan playing twin brothers, I’ve gone down the rabbithole of ‘how did they DO that’ on the interwebs. The soundtrack was spectacular and I’ve had it playing all day as I did stuff around the house. It’s billed as a horror film, and it is, but I in general cannot watch horror films and I will watch this dozens of times, I am sure. [disclaimer: yes I watched parts between my fingers and I let out one gasp that everyone near me heard]

I want nothing more than to talk about it, all the interesting bits and the things I did not expect and how it will most assuredly be a staple in future film studies classes, but I can’t. Because there’s almost nothing I can say about it that isn’t going to spoil it for you if you haven’t seen it. And I don’t want to DO that for you because you deserve to experience every second of it without waiting for “that scene” or “that phrase”, etc. There’s only one thing I can say… when you see it, watch ALL THE WAY through the end credits or you will miss things. You’ll thank me for that, and I feel bad for the 30% of the theater that had to pee so bad they left too soon.

In contrast, take Conclave, which we watched a couple of weeks ago BEFORE Pope Francis died. That movie also was fantastic in my opinion, with great performances from the principal actors, a great score, and beautiful scenery. But I can tell you that it’s about a conclave to elect the next Pope, with drama and intrigue and a surprise ending. We could chat about everything EXCEPT a couple of scenes and I wouldn’t spoil the movie for you… I mean, a whole lotta Cardinals and nuns in the Vatican is literally what the movie is about.

While I tried to figure out what I could write about tonight when all I can think about is this movie that I can’t talk about with you, it occurred to me this can’t possibly be the only movie that is hard to describe without spoilers. But my brain is full of this one movie only so I’m asking you, dear Top Comments Readers, to chime in with movies that fit this description… or to share what your greatest movies are. No Spoilers please (unless the movie is old enough that ‘spoiler’ doesn’t really apply)

As we head over to the Tops (three days’ worth!!), I’m gonna leave you with one song from Sinners. If you’ve seen the movie, you know what scene it is. Dayyum.
