Today, Canada holds national elections. Similar to the United Kingdom, they have a Parliamentary system based on 343 individual member “ridings” (from a time when members were presumed to ride on horse through their district).
There are generally three electoral choices in each district: the incumbent Liberals, the opposition Conservatives and the New Democrats (Ridings in Quebec also have a candidate for Bloc Quebécois). The Liberals have been in power for close to a decade and were widely expected to lose until Donald Trump began talking about acquiring Canada as a US State (as recently as today) and threatening tariffs. Now they’re again given the edge in polling.
Polls are open and will close between 9:30 and 10:00 Eastern time this evening.
