As if the COVID-19 pandemic didn’t teach us enough, the far right’s blatant disregard for critical, responsible public health initiatives is surfacing yet again.

In recent developments, Trump’s aid cuts have significantly weakened critical youth vaccination programs domestically and internationally. These cuts have hampered efforts to maintain high immunization rates, crucial for preventing diseases like measles. The immediate impact of this policy shift is now becoming evident, as the U.S. faces its worst measles outbreak in decades.
According to Dr. Jennifer Miao’s research, “Dr. Marschall Runge, dean of the University of Michigan Medical School and CEO of Michigan Medicine, said the number of cases -- at the national level and in Texas -- is likely an undercount. ”
With that being said, the disease, once declared eliminated in the U.S. in 2000, has resurged, with hundreds of new cases reported this year across 29+ states. Public health experts trace part of this resurgence to lowered vaccination coverage, exacerbated by reduced funding for outreach, education, and vaccine access programs previously supported by federal aid.
