PRICE GOUGING? [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

I like to compare the prices I pay here in northern Mexico to the prices in nearby states in the USA. Most especially since the tariff trade war started! I thought you might like to know the relative prices of things too.

According to CNBC, More Americans are financing groceries with buy now, pay later loans — and more are paying those bills late.

Are you being ripped off? I’ve chosen the same supermarket — HEB — in Monterrey and in San Antonio, TX. Here are some comparisons:

(all MX prices converted to USD/lb at today’s rate, for convenience)

Mexico USA % more or less cost

TOMATOES $0.58 $1.39 +240%

TOMATILLO $0.58 $1.01 +174%

ONION white $0.73 $1.54 +211%

AVOCADO $1.06 $2.06 EACH!!! Can’t compare by weight, no info.

POTATO Mx $0.51 $1.75 +343%

POTATO USA $0.65 $1.02 +157% (Idaho russet, identical.)

APPLES Gala $1.84 $1.28 — 30% (US import, in Mexico)

APPLES HCrsp $1.50 $2.44 +163%

Bell P, green $1.60 $0.60 EACH — Can’t compare by weight, no info

Tomatoes, tomatillos, and cucumbers. Monterrey. Prices in pesos/Kg. My photo.

I could go on, and on, and on, but I believe it is already obvious that even BEFORE the additional tariffs are applied soon, you’re paying very much more for your groceries, as Trump likes to put it.

I invite your comments as to the huge differential in food prices caused just by crossing the border and shopping in the same supermarket — HEB.

One thing in particular jumped out at me: the Idaho potatoes. How come a potato that has to travel 300Km further from Idaho, and cross a border, being sold in Mexico substantially cheaper than in the USA? I’d love to hear an explanation of that.

All prices were converted using an exchange rate of MXN$20.5 = USD$1
