100 Days of Regress
We’re all aware of the trump shitshow, of course. But many of us are in situations in which the manifestations might be disguised or subtle. For us, California is blue, as is Sonoma County, and affluence might be thought of as somewhat protective.
Our county is a tourism destination, and the effects on tourism are already being felt locally as Canadians who once flocked to this region choose to stay home amid the turmoil. Our wineries are already affected; we know many folks in the industry and their hours have been cut, and tasting rooms have fewer visitors. Agricultural workers are being deported; who will work the fields and vineyards?
Recently two of the 7 nearby restaurants have closed. Also our total favorite, Hana. The latter is especially tragic. Many restaurant workers are immigrants. Construction workers as well.
Everyone who has a 401K, or other stock market investments (which is 62% of us) has suffered massive losses. People we know have received buyout offers or have been fired. This has created a “climate of fear” and it is a subject of discussion everywhere.
Local awareness has been heightened by the massive numbers of visible protests, along with good media coverage, both local and national.
How obvious are the changes in your area, or your lives? Are you seeing those effects I mentioned above? Is anyone oblivious?
President donald trump has the lowest 100-day job approval rating of any president in the past 80 years, with public pushback on many of his policies and extensive economic discontent, including broad fears of a recession, according to a new poll. There’s hope.
