Update 4:30 PM PDT: This story is going around social media: Did Donald Trump Fall Asleep At Pope Francis' Funeral? Photo Goes Viral.
A photo of US President Donald Trump at the funeral of Pope Francis has gone viral on social media, with users alleging that the 78-year-old, seated beside First Lady Melania Trump, fell asleep during the funeral. In the photo, Trump can be seen with his face down and eyes closed. It triggered social media commentary, with many making fun of the President.

Trump’s fixation on golfing is notorious; there are several websites devoted just to tracking how much time he spends on the links. Most say it’s 25% of his presidency so far — which is slightly misleading; he has gone golfing on 25% of the days he’s been president, which is not quite the same as spending 25% of his time as president at golf. Still. And then there’s the cost to us taxpayers:
How many days Donald Trump has spent playing golf since election and staggering cost to taxpayer
Donald Trump only returned to office in January but the insane amount of time he has spent playing golf since then would certainly suggest otherwise. . . . This is all well and good in sensible amounts but when you're the President of the United States, it's probably wise to ensure you don't let anything get in the way of running one of the most powerful countries in the world.
He certainly didn’t let a little thing like the funeral of a pope get in his way. After spending a total of 14 hours (including sleep time) in Rome for the pope’s funeral — and after bullying the Vatican into giving him a front-row seat — Trump couldn’t be bothered to stick around to talk to world leaders (other than Zelenskyy, which he did before the funeral). Trump’s 14 Hours in Rome: Fleeting Encounters Amid Global Discord
President Trump flew briefly this weekend into a European continent he has thrown into chaos in recent months, paying respects to Pope Francis at his funeral, but also meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine at a critical moment that may decide both the country’s boundaries and its fate. Mr. Trump was on the ground in Rome for about 14 hours, and left immediately after the services for the pope in St. Peter’s Square, stopping only for handshakes or greetings with a few of the presidents, prime ministers, royals and religious leaders who came to the ceremony.
Why the rush?
Mr. Trump told aides he wanted to make it back to his golf resort in New Jersey before the end of the day.
OK, he probably also didn’t want to talk the Europeans whom he’s jerking around on tariffs, and he certainly didn’t want to take the chance of running into Joe Biden. And besides, his buddy Putin wasn’t there anyway (didn’t want to take the chance of getting arrested under that ICJ warrant — though there was really no chance Italy would have arrested him). It’s not like meeting foreign leaders is part of his job description. Oh, wait: it is. Oopsie. Hey, it’s the weekend; why waste it?
Or maybe this was the reason: Trump Gets Called Out in Front of Millions at Pope’s Funeral
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re used the homily to criticize the president, who was seated in the front row to hear it. . . . Re said: “Pope Francis incessantly raised his voice, imploring peace and calling for reason and honest negotiation to find possible solutions ... ‘Build bridges, not walls,’ was an exhortation he repeated many times.”
Or maybe it was the blue suit he wore while almost everyone else wore black? Well, Prince William also wore blue, but he was representing his father, the head of the Church of England, so perhaps he was making that point. Even Zelenskyy wore a black version of his standard military outfit. But Trump clearly wore his suit — which was bright blue rather than the prince’s more sober dark blue — so he could — as always — make himself the center of attention.
