Let’s have a chat you and I
About the progress we’ve made
We are no longer segregated.
Instead, we are gerrymandered
We are no longer being lynched
Instead, we are being shot
We are no longer enslaved
Instead, we are being jailed
We are getting paid now
But about 50% less than you
We can get credit too now
But for the manufactured criminal history
Some can make it now
But mostly in the entertainment industry
We can get loans now
We just rarely get approved
We can go to your schools now
But not learn of our history
We can apply for jobs now
Just not higher offices and positions
Let’s not forget, underfunding our schools
Polluting our neighborhoods
I’m somewhat confused and lost
Still trying to find this equality we got
Seems you want me to settle for less
And applaud this so-called progress
A word that simply ensures
That we never catch up with you
But it allows you at least to pretend
That you’ve done something
Even though we both know
You’ve just simply changed tactics
So long as we remain behind you
You will throw a crumb now and then
Try to fool us into believing we’re moving
But the gap between us remains the same
When all is said and done
You’re still racist after all
Do I have that white?
Oops I meant right?
