preview: Next Saturday May 3: songs with the word ‘May’ in the title

Words are from this Wiki: Sun

The Sun is by far the brightest object in the Earth’s sky, about 13 billion times brighter than the next brightest star, Sirius. Its diameter is about 109 times that of Earth. It mass is about 330,000 times that of Earth, making up about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System (the Sun and the objects that orbit it). link: Solar System

One astronomical unit (about 93 million miles) is defined as the mean distance between the centers of the Sun and the Earth. At its average distance, light travels from the Sun's horizon to Earth's horizon in about 8 minutes and 20 seconds.

The Sun today is roughly halfway through the main-sequence portion of its life. It has not changed dramatically in over four billion years and will remain fairly stable for about five billion more.

The brightness of the Sun can cause pain from looking at it with the naked eye; however, doing so for brief periods is not hazardous for normal non-dilated eyes. Viewing of the direct Sun with the naked eye can cause UV-induced, sunburn-like lesions on the retina beginning after about 100 seconds. During sunrise and sunset, the Sun is sometimes faint enough to be viewed comfortably with the naked eye.

In ancient Roman culture, Sunday was the day of the sun god. It was adopted as the Sabbath Day by Christians. Christian churches were built so that the congregation faced toward the sunrise. In paganism, the Sun was a source of life.

Time for some Sunny songs:

Sunny by Bobby Hebb

When Sunny Gets Blue by Johnny Mathis

The Sunny Side Of The Street by Louis Armstrong
