Even though 78% of Americans believe climate change is real, and 54% believe it’s human caused, we are a long way from beating a very solvable problem. How do we get those numbers up so that we can push the government to DO SOMETHING? Psychologists at UCLA and Princeton have an answer: Don’t talk analog, talk binary.
“Showing people continuous data, such as temperature increases in a town, left people with a vague impression of gradual change, but showing binary data for the same town, specifically whether a lake froze or not each winter, brought home the striking shift, said incoming UCLA communications professor and cognitive psychologist Rachit Dubey.”
We are being slowly boiled, like the frog.
You might look up some examples from your locality and sprinkle them in to casual conversations.
For instance, the length of winter on the Great Lakes is now nearly THREE WEEKS SHORTER THAN IN 1995. Do you like ice fishing? Do you like skating on your local pond? White Christmases? Well, you’ve got less of it now.
