Gratitude [1]

Welcome to the Street Prophets Coffee Hour cleverly hidden at the intersection of religion, art, science, food, and politics. This is an open thread where we can share our thoughts and comments about the day. What are you grateful for today? How can we be grateful in today’s political climate?

Over at the Conversation, Monica Bartlett, Professor of Psychology at Gonzaga University, has an interesting article on the benefits of gratitude. She writes:

“Generally, negative information captures attention more readily than the positive.”

This makes it easier for us to miss the good things and the beauty which surround us.

Monica Bartlett writes:

“Gratitude is experienced as a positive emotion. It results from noticing that others − including friends and family certainly, but also strangers, a higher power or the planet − have provided assistance or given something of value such as friendship or financial support. By definition, gratitude is focused on others’ care or on entities outside of oneself. It is not about one’s own accomplishments or luck.”

Gratitude enhances our sense of well-being and happiness; it counteracts the negativity bias. But the challenge is: How do we practice gratitude in our daily lives?

Monica Bartlett writes:

“One way to do this is to try a gratitude journal. Or, if the idea of journaling is daunting or annoying, perhaps call it a daily list instead.”

Monica Bartlett writes:

“A second method for practicing gratitude is expressing that gratitude to others.”

As a sober alcoholic, I regularly participate in a Native American wellbriety talking circle. In our final round, participants talk about what they are grateful for today. Thus, the meeting ends with positive energy.
