I completely agree with this assessment.
We have to win on constitutional erosion and politically advantageous stories.
This isn’t either. I doubt this judge is guilty, but is it conceivable there is probable cause for an arrest? I don’t know—maybe, maybe not. We’ll see how this works through the process.
The point though is the executive branch can do many things which are terrible but LEGAL and we have to juxtapose that with whether and when fighting that is helpful to the greater cause.
Is THIS the story we should focus on? As far as we can tell the arrest was by the book. (Obviously sensational in a cohesive intentional way)
She may not be convicted. This may not even stand up to a grand jury, but she wasn’t arrested for political reasons or judgements but for an alleged crime, that is a real crime. I say this all not being a lawyer but my best understanding from someone with this experience.
So this frenzy empowers Trump by obscuring the fight between disagreements about the legitimate use of power(however norm busting it maybe) and actual constitutional and democratic erosion.
Now this story will give Hegseth cover, give cover to the Garcia case, to the crashing economy. This is exactly what Trump wants and this is clearly intentional given the very public spectacle in which this was conducted and the timing as well.
We need to keep our eye on the prize and keep the pressure and the stories going that are supportive of a cohesive and broad coalition of the anti Trump project.
WE ARE WINNING THE PUBLIC DISCOURSE!!
We can’t let up now and get distracted. We have the initiative, I fear we will lose it.
