He Just Wants To Put His Name On It [1]

The Great One has been busy lately. Greenland, Panama, tariffs flying like hurricane rain. Is there a plan behind this, some great objective? I think so, but it may not be what we think.

First, we should consider the nature of the man himself. Only two things seem to motivate him—money and his brand. His love of money is obvious. He measures his worth in it and nothing else. However, his compulsion to leave his name on everything he touches needs to be examined, because, considering his position, his whim could have an effect on foreign affairs as well as domestic.

Regarding Greenland he called out the future establishment of airbases, ground troops, and mineral extraction as necessary for U.S. survival, yet all these things already exist. They were established many years ago, but the deal has some other president’s name in a place where his own could be found.

For 5 million dollars selected individuals could purchase citizenship under a plan recently proposed. An almost identical plan has been in effect for some years, but replacing something which already exists would allow him to stamp his own name over the previous one.

During his first term amid great fanfare, he demanded and got minor changes to NAFTA and then claimed to have negotiated a whole new trade pact with Canada and Mexico. This “new” treaty now has his name on it.

He leaves his name on everything he has built, even if he doesn’t own a majority of his own project. His rancor against Panama many have something to do with the removal of his name from one of his buildings there when the actual owners fired his management team.

His biggest attempt to impress his name is worldwide, considering the level of authority he now holds. He seeks not only to restructure our relationships with foreign nations, but also to completely remodel the American economy. The philosophical underpinnings supporting these desires seem to be prejudices he obtained early in life. Once established, nothing changes in his mind.

It has already been considered that his tariff program is not merely intended to alleviate a trade imbalance, or even predominantly to raise money. The threats of tariffs may be intended to work as leverage, forcing a reluctant nation into a deal that the Great One can put his name on.

The real objective of this tariff program may have been revealed in what happened to Vietnam. That nation, having a good deal of trade with the U.S. now crippled by huge additional costs, offered to cut their own tariffs to 0%. They were told that this was not enough. There was one additional thing to be demanded. . . Does this sound familiar? This is the Great Man’s style.

Snark wise, perhaps we could ease The Great Man’s mind by feeding his compulsion a bit. For example. . .

We could name the whole egg industry after him.

We could rebrand that controversial body of water between Florida and Yucatan with his name.

We could require that every windmill in the U.S. have his name on it in big letters.

Greenlanders could dodge the heat by offering to rename their island after him.

He doesn’t care whether or not anything he puts his hand to is accepted or successfully functional.

He just wants to put his name on it.
