Darrell Issa Attempts to Meet Constituents at a McDonald's Drive in. It Doesn't Go as Planned. [1]

Word got out earlier this week that at noon on Thursday, April 25, my congressman Darrell Issa (R, CA-48) would be serving people at a McDonald’s drive thru window, giving each customer a “complimentary” order of “freedom fries” (is that still a thing?) in San Marcos, not far from where I live. Issa, of course, has long had a reputation of being a terrible human being, and utterly unresponsive to the requests of his constituents (at least the ones who aren’t rich). He chaired the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee from January 2011 to January 2015, after which he lost his seat. During his tenure leading that committee, he was responsible for one of those endless investigations on Hillary Clinton, and showed nothing but contempt for the ranking Democratic congressman on the committee, the late Elijah Cummings. He returned to Congress in 2019, but as a back-bencher.

He has not held a town hall for years. Indivisible scheduled a town hall in Escondido on March 23 of this year, but nobody expected him to come, and he didn’t. There are many constituents who want to give him an earful. Instead, other community leaders answered questions from the audience.

Now, suddenly, with this McDonald’s appearance, constituents might have an opportunity to ask him some questions. As it happened, constituents came out in force—all the ones that Issa didn’t want to talk to.

An organizer of the street rally who declined to give her name said the event’s purpose was to urge Issa to hold an in-person town hall. “Our entire motivation is to have an audience with him — have all these fine folks be able to tell their representative what is important to them,” she said. … [Said another protester] “I’m here because I want to talk to my congressman — and tell him just how upset I am about all that’s going on right now,” she said, holding a cardboard sign with the hand-lettered message “Hey Issa! Chicken nuggets would be more appropriate — 2,900-plus days no town hall.” “I want to know where he stands.”

The Times of San Diego said that there were about 100 people there, but it looks like there were a lot more than that, maybe twice as many, at least. Here are some photos:

In any case, noon came and went, and Issa didn’t show up. As one of those signs said, maybe he should have tried an event at the KFC?
