Thursday 4/24 edition of lots of Dems doing what we want them to do... [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-04-24

This series is born out of frustration with seeing people on social media and this site say, “Where are the Dems?” or “What are the Dems doing?” This is not meant as an exhaustive list, but merely as a highlight of the types of the activities and statements they’re doing and making.

A big welcome to all of you who are new to this series, which I publish Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Please, before you complain about the party, take a few minutes of time to see if your concerns are being addressed.

I also encourage EVERYONE to check out the following diary series. lpeacock does Thursday diaries on the Congressional Black Caucus. Dfh1 is doing a Monday and Friday series that spotlight individual Democrats. T2 has also just begun a series called the Rainbow Roundup, where focus is placed on LGBTQ lawmakers and journalists. And Billboteach has one focusing on Hispanic elected Democrats.

You can gain easy access to all these diaries by following the Democratic Party Spotlight Group.

On the Democratic Daily Download, @wassermanschultz.house.gov talks about the high cost of living for families.

Democrats doing Democratic things…

x Republicans are crashing the economy and driving us into a recession.

We are focused on building an affordable economy that lowers the high cost of living in America. pic.twitter.com/j3Rz5Ldzz6 — Hakeem Jeffries (@RepJeffries) April 21, 2025

x The details keep coming out. We keep learning how Pete Hegseth put lives at risk. But Trump is still too weak to fire him.

Pete Hegseth must be fired. — Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) April 20, 2025

x DNC Chair @kenmartin73: As a Minnesotan, Pete Hegseth is the worst export Minnesota has ever seen. He needs to either resign or be fired. pic.twitter.com/OQs5xtNm7h — Democrats (@TheDemocrats) March 25, 2025

x Republicans want to ZERO OUT Head Start funding. That’s thousands of kids, dozens of schools, and hundreds of teachers in the Virgin Islands left with nothing. No early education. No child care. No support. This is an attack on our future—and we won’t let it slide. Speak out.… pic.twitter.com/0Re6nqYMv7 — Rep. Stacey Plaskett (@StaceyPlaskett) April 23, 2025

x Trump and Elon are trying to break Social Security. We have got to fight back - no cuts, no delays, no "reforms" that send people to call centers. No games with Social Security. https://t.co/laTEvoUPwH — Rep. Shontel Brown (@RepShontelBrown) April 23, 2025

x In places like Alabama, where median income barely tops $30K, families can’t afford higher car prices, lost jobs, and a tax on everyday life. That’s why @RepSCFigures is speaking out against Trump’s reckless tariffs. pic.twitter.com/SanbUDsKsk — Congressional Dads Caucus (@DadsCaucus) April 22, 2025

x The proposed Medicaid cuts would cut maternity coverage for 100s of thousands of women.

x This morning, I signed HB 1321 alongside Rep. Sharlett Mena to protect Washington’s autonomy by preventing other states from sending their National Guard here.

x Trump and his clown show are back at it- screwing things up with the same reckless incompetence we've come to expect. Are they even trying to fake competence anymore, or is raw chaos just the game plan now? It's infuriating watching this level of stupidity pass for leadership. https://t.co/6kIKjKVju1 — Ken Martin (@kenmartin73) April 19, 2025

x I put a hold on Ed Martin’s nomination.

x Get this: Trump has signed just 5 bills into law.

That’s the lowest number at this point in a presidency in 70 years.

It doesn’t have to be this way!

x 4 in 10 families go into debt paying for child care.⁰

So, what's the GOP answer to helping lower costs for parents?

Eliminating Head Start.

A total betrayal.https://t.co/ApDzzKJb27 — Katherine Clark (@WhipKClark) April 23, 2025

Worth the 2.5 minutes to watch.

x This is a very important explainer — remember that the Trump administration is trying to flood the zone to overwhelm, discourage and ultimately prevent opposition.

Townhalls and community events.

A small focus on my House member — Rep. Jared Huffman. My district goes from the Golden Gate Bridge, and travels ~370 miles north to the Oregon border. The southern end of this district is populated, but it gets increasingly less populated the farther north it goes. Huffman does a really good job of traveling and meeting with the northern portion of the district, and delivers for that area as well. It takes effort to get there, and there’s probably more republicans in that part of the district than in my end, the southern end. He does it, though, and I have a lot of respect for him because of that.

Today I’m focusing on his time the past few days in my part of the district — Marin County and part of Sonoma County.

x It was great to chat with some bright young minds at Del Mar Middle School this week! We talked about our system of checks and balances, my role in Congress, and what we're doing to combat gun violence.

x National Marine Sanctuaries are not only treasured areas that protect our oceans and lakes, but they also are essential to our coastal economies.

So I am proud to welcome @RepJackBergman to join me in relaunching the bipartisan National Marine Sanctuary Caucus. https://t.co/xfxwY1gN7q — Rep. Jared Huffman (@RepHuffman) April 23, 2025

Rep. Mike Thompson represents the part of Sonoma County that Rep. Huffman doesn’t.

x 1 in 5 Americans rely on Social Security benefits to live independently due to disabilities or to retire comfortably - but Trump is cutting trillions in funding and putting Americans’ necessary benefits in danger. I hosted a roundtable with Rep. Mike Thompson to raise awareness on local impacts.

Tuesday he held a townhall at the local community college in Marin. Then later that day he held a fundraiser in Petaluma, Sonoma County. My husband and I attended that fun fundraiser. Both events had Rep. Jamie Raskin in attendance. He was definitely a big draw at the fundraiser as it was the largest of this annual event, according to Huffman. They had to stop ticket sales a month ago.

Our tickets were $40 each and included chili, cornbread, a cookie and beer/wine and live music. The event was at a local brewery — Lagunitas.

Rep. Huffman said the typical things about fighting and how we have to be optimistic to get through this administration. He acknowledged his new role as Ranking Member of the House Natural Resources Committee as well. He also acknowledged the profound danger we’re in now. He said the prez is, “...trying to bully his way into a dictatorship.” He also said that he’s trying to take away our joy and also called on us to have, “...the fierce optimism of the will!”

Rep. Raskin spoke eloquently about the constitution and the rule of law. Often quoting at length from the Constitution, including the preamble in its entirety. He also quoted Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine. It was very clear that he was a former constitutional law professor. Raskin also described how the two of them worked together to found the Congressional Freethought Caucus. It’s an interesting group of ~20 members.

In 2017, after Rep. Huffman came out as the only openly non-religious member of Congress, he and Rep. Raskin agreed that Congress needed a working coalition to defend church-state separation and secular values.

We left after the speeches, but the band returned and Rep. Huffman played guitar with them and Rep. Raskin tried his skill at keyboard. He said during his remarks that he knew how to play piano, and it would be a bit of a challenge to play the keyboard.

Rep. Huffman introducing Rep. Raskin
