"Code of the District of Columbia § 22–3251. Extortion: (a) A person commits the offense of extortion if: (1) That person obtains or attempts to obtain the property of another with the other’s consent which was induced by wrongful use of actual or threatened force or violence or by wrongful threat of economic injury; or (2) That person obtains or attempts to obtain property of another with the other’s consent which was obtained under color or pretense of official right. (b) Any person convicted of extortion shall be fined not more than the amount set forth in § 22-3571.01 or imprisoned for not more than 10 years, or both." (code.dccouncil.gov)

"As things stand, Trump has targeted 14 firms, four of which have fought back in response to presidential orders. Two firms, meanwhile, struck deals with Trump that led him to rescind the punishments he’d already imposed. Another firm that was hit with an order is still weighing its options. But as of Friday, the other seven firms — half of the overall total — chose pre-emptive appeasement: Members of this septet learned that the president was likely to punish the firm, prompting it to cave before Trump threw a punch." A federal judge in Washington, D.C., temporarily blocked President Donald Trump's recent executive order aimed at Susman Godfrey, the law firm that has for years represented Dominion Voting Systems -- the leading supplier of election technology across the U.S. The decision from Judge Loren AliKhan on Tuesday is the latest win for one of the few law firms that have fought back against Trump's orders instead of striking a deal. Trump's executive order seeks to block the firm's access to government buildings and cancel government contracts, among others, over their "previous activities.” (abcnews.go.com 4-15-25)

"More than 80 U.S. organizations released an open letter...against President Trump's intimidation of judges who challenge his administration's policies and law firms he views as adversaries." (axios.com 4-3-25)
