While trying to claw my way out of an Internet rabbit hole the other night, I came across a piece on the Flashbak.com website (flashbak.com/...). It was a look back at a cartoon published in Spin magazine by Tom Tomorrow, the nome d’arte of Dan Perkins, whose strip This Modern World appears weekly on Daily Kos. The cartoon, published in 1994, was an amazing, frighteningly prescient prediction of the colossal mess we’re now in. I don’t mean to step on Dan’s toes or his column; if anything, I hope this brings more attention to his work, which has garnered many awards, including a Herblock Prize and, ironically, a couple of Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Awards. He was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2015 but has not won one, to the Pulitzer committee’s everlasting shame. Below is a closeup of the cartoon’s four panels. Brilliant, terrifying work.
