So, how much do Americans know about the bird flu?

Not NEARLY enough.

I can confirm some of this study from my own experiences on Instagram. People think it is just an agricultural problem and would go away if we banned factory farming. A lot of people think it is just in America. Or just started a couple of years ago. Many deny that it is at all serious. And of course there is the oppositional defiant cohort that immediately say it's a hoax, a conspiracy, cooked up by Democrats, made up to sell vaccines, "you lied to us about Covid and we will never trust you again", on and on OMG. I don’t have the skills to detect if any of these are bots, but I fear the attitude is real in a significant number of actual people.

Also, False measles claims are getting a lot of attention.. Really, social media is a battlefield. And our alleged HHS secretary is making matters much much worse.

In more news you really didn't want to hear, covid viruses remain infective in cadavers of infected mice for up to seven days, depending on temperature of storage. Compared to only hours or two days for other viruses tested.

Vietnam reports a case of H5N1 manifesting as encephalitis. Thus expanding the range of known tissues affected. But given the neurological symptoms seen in birds and animals, really, this is not surprising.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) today reported four more H5N1 avian flu detections in dairy cattle, three from Idaho and one from California, raising the national total since March 2024 to 1,025 detections from 17 states. Idaho has now reported 65 detections, making it the second most affected state behind California, which has reported 765. The Idaho Department of Agriculture says 25 herds are currently quarantined, with 16 in Gooding County, 7 in Jerome County, and 2 in Twin Falls County. In poultry developments, APHIS over the past few days has reported one more H5N1 detection, which involves a live bird market in New York’s Queens County.

Spring bird migrations are going to spike infections again.

The University of Cambridge–based DioSynVax and Singapore's ACM Biolabs have signed a deal to jointly develop a next-generation universal avian flu vaccine with the potential for mucosal delivery. The mRNA vaccine targets all major clades of the H5 avian flu subtype and is scalable for rapid, global distribution, according to a press release from DioSynVax. Delivery via a nasal spray could help increase uptake of the vaccine.

This could be a game changer. Don't expect our government to get on board with it, but research will go ahead anyway.

Testing of more than 36,000 deer has detected 243 cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in 35 Missouri counties—including 7 previously unaffected areas, the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) announced yesterday.

Long Covid is far more prevalent than commonly thought. While many eventually recover, a very significant portion are affected long term.

Covid-19 diminishes sperm quality. Bad news for all those conservative pro-natalists who also hate public health measures.

Chikungunya outbreak spreads on Reunion Island The last nine months have seen 35,000 cases. This is an insect-borne disease.

Five people and 27 animals Were diagnosed with tularemia in Minnesota last year. While usually tick-borne, this disease can also be contracted by inhalation or handling diseased animals. Some of the patients reported mowing over small dead animals. Maybe we should mask when mowing?

Caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis, tularemia typically affects 200 to 300 people each year in the United States, most often in the central part of the country.
