GamersNexus — What Journalism Should Look Like [1]

GamersNexus is a Web site and YouTube channel devoted to tech industry news and product reviews that impact computer-based gaming. If you, for example, own a PC with an NVIDIA-based GPU, you may well have selected that GPU based in part on GamersNexus’s detailed reviews and benchmarks.

But GamersNexus occasionally does more than that, doing deep dives into significant industry developments. Their coverage last year of the corruption and collapse of EKWB, a manufacturer of liquid cooling solutions for PCs, was absolutely first rate — the kind of in-depth investigative reporting that mainstream news outlets used to do (I’m looking at you, CBS News).

Today, GamersNexus released The Death of Affordable Computing, a three hour video covering the on-again off-again tariffs and the impact they have had on the tech industry. The video goes into unprecedented detail about the nature and magnitude of the damage that slob has done — so far.

With just one other person, Stephen Burke criss-crossed the US interviewing nine impacted companies, some of which you may have heard of. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill, contextless, string-a-bunch-of-soundbites-together thin gruel that so typifies mainstream commercial “journalism” today. There are deep, lucid discussions about cost of goods, the depth and breadth of international supply chains, the primary and secondary effects of tariffs (spoiler: it snowballs), and the decisions now faced by these companies.

But more than just the magnitude of the tariffs, what these companies are most frustrated by is the uncertainty and chaos. They can’t plan for anything, because those plans may get shredded in mere hours when that slob changes his mind, again.

Yes, three hours is a big chunk of time. You needn’t watch it all in one go. I daresay you will find just the first 30 minutes will be incredibly informative and educational about just what these companies are facing. And Steve manages to put it all together in an accessible, engaging way.

THIS is what journalism should look like.
