Earth Day 2025: Springtime in Arizona's Verde Valley. [1]

This week I'm sharing some recent pictures of the scenery and animals in the region where I live, Arizona's Verde Valley. Here, spring starts out chilly and very windy; then the afternoons turn warm. And very windy. For a few weeks you wake up needing to wear warm layers, then by mid-afternoon you're hunting for your shorts and sandals.

For Earth Day this year I'm setting aside special time outdoors to drink in and appreciate the beauty of our world around me, praying, and making a ritual offering in gratitude to the spirits of this place.

A recent sunrise as seen from my back door.

Frost on my car windshield a few weeks ago. Probably our last frost until next winter.

The biggest mesquite tree here is covered in feathery new leaves. I have lots of wind chimes and bird feeders hanging from the branches.

A little toad my son spotted. The first one of the season.

Some cows ambling along a dirt road near Sedona.

My rosemary shrubs are beginning to bloom.

A watercolor-like sunset at the end of a rainy day.

Geraniums and kitchen herbs on the balcony outside my bedroom.

A tiny lizard on my patio. We have so many baby lizards right now.

The first creosote blossoms of the year. The bees have come out to swarm all over these.

A hagstone ward outside my back door. This is the season when I refresh the wards around this place; I make them using natural materials, most of them found on my property.

The first flower bud on my biggest pomegranate tree.

A heron at his favorite fishing spot on Oak Creek last week.

My garlic chives are flowering.

Another mesquite tree in my yard, against a brilliant clear blue sky.

The very first globe mallow flowers in my yard. I'm a little surprised to see them, we had a pretty dry winter.

A group of ducks on the Verde River.

Snow up on Mingus Mountain last Saturday.

An especially gorgeous sunset last week.

Happy and Blessed Earth Day, everyone.
