This country that I love, this country that I hate
You are not always beautiful
So many flaws like scars mar your surface
But once in a while there’s a flare of kindness
An outpouring of what you should be
And then I remember that’s why I love you
For the promise that lays within you
For the dream fighting to come true
Somewhere buried under all those flaws
There’s beauty struggling to come out
Once in a while you are transformed
And love breaks out over your scars
That’s when I remember why I love you
For your potential for greatness
For the dream fighting to come true
Often you choose pettiness and cruelty
Displaying the traits you’ve not yet subdued
But once in a while, there’s that flash of pure joy
A glimpse of the future that could be
And then I remember that when I hate you
It’s when you retreat from your destiny
Hiding the love that you promised me
Hiding the dream, I was born to see
