Spirit of Revolution in the Ayuh ... [scenes from a small-town protest in Maine] [1]

The spirit of revolution was in the air across the nation on Saturday. In the words of Heather Cox Richardson — the historian who is chronicling our times in her daily “Letter from an American”:
Saturday, April 19, 2025: “On the 250th anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord at the beginning of the Revolutionary War, Americans across the country protested against President Donald J. Trump, his billionaire sidekick Elon Musk, and the administration in general.”
This time the British aren’t coming and the oppressor is not King George III. But tyranny is definitely on the march. As is obvious to those who possess common sense and compassion, our own government has turned against us.
Today’s wannabe king is a former reality TV host, convicted criminal and bumbling psychopath whose malignorant narcissism and ongoing molestation of the Constitution is on full disgusting display for all to see.
So yes, people took to the streets in cities and towns across America again on Saturday to protest the destruction of our nation. And yes, that spirit of revolution was loudly, even joyfully on display in my seaside hometown of York, Maine (est. 1652).
I was there, in front of the Town Hall and First Parish Church (1747), lifted by the energy of those coming together for an essential common cause — joining people with signs and loud voices who lined the town’s main street next to such historic buildings as Jefferds Tavern (1750) and the York Corner Schoolhouse (1745).
As I said in one of several videos I filmed while rolling through the heart of our pro-America protest on York Street: “The resistance is here! … Loud and clear!”
Of course, not everyone sees the light. As you know, many of our neighbors seem quite ecstatic about the situation, celebrating the shadow that Trump and his henchmen and women have cast over us all.
Some grinning fool paraded through the protest in an Elon Musk-brand Cybertruck. Poor guy. He’s too trumped up on Trump to have a clue what’s happening to his country. Many more offered single-fingered salutes.
Just down the road in Portsmouth, NH, a similar rally for the soul of our nation filled the sidewalks in Market Square, the second such event in two weeks.
I had attended the April 5 demonstration there with my (in retrospect, ridiculously hard to read at a glance) cardboard sign “Stop This Dystrumpian Ameripocalypse!”
After Saturday’s rally, I sought out our local newspaper’s coverage of the our local anti-Trump, pro-America activities.
As expected, in the comments under the paper’s Facebook post, were dozens of Trumpers exercising their First Amendment right to engage in Trump-brand taunting and trolling.
Here is a small sampling of direct quotes:
What a bunch of losers
Lonely, needy, attention seekers
I smell hippies!
Shut up
How embarrassing where’s a bulldozer when u need one
Every one of those anti-American shitlibs should be arrested (and perhaps sent to El Salvador, right Heather?)
Of course, many communicated with memes rather than offering thoughts or ideas; lots of gif images of Trump doing that stupid dance, one with the words “The Winning Continues.”
The usual stuff about the hated liberals being mentally ill crybabies. Apparently we are also “crack heads” and “Satanic.”
So that is what we are up against, America. Not just Trump, Musk and an administration crammed full of autocrat sycophants, but cities and towns bursting at the seams with neighbors who haven’t yet figured out what is happening to them. To all of us. To the U.S. of us.
As one of the commenters said so eloquently, “Trump derangement syndrome is alive and well.” It certainly is, neighbor. It most certainly unfortunately is.
