I’m part of Third Act, the organization founded by Bill McKibben for activists over 60. One of the projects I’m involved with through T.A. is a team producing an Environment/Music pod/videocast called “Cool Tunes For A Hot Planet.” Which I recommend, because it’s good stuff.
Our thirteenth episode, released last week, featured composer Linda J. Chase, whose oratorio, “For Our Common Home — Resounding Ecojustice” is having its world premiere on Saturday, May 10, at Harvard University’s Sanders Theater. The large-scale work for orchestra and chorus was commissioned by the influential progressive theologian Harvey Cox, and takes as its text, Laudato Si, Pope Francis’ 2015 “climate encyclical,” which urged “care for our common home.”
I interviewed Linda and played excerpts from a 2022 preview performance of excerpts from her work, which is gorgeous. Lots of expressive singing, beautifully handled harmonies, and wonderful setting of Pope Francis’ eloquent text.
Pope Francis heard a recording of the preview performance, and wrote to Ms. Chase, “I very much appreciated your work. Thank you for your sensibility and commitment. The world constantly needs to be made aware of the importance of the care for our common home. Please continue with zeal, joy, and creativity.”
With today’s news, I wanted to offer this deeply moving tribute. It was an honor to interview Linda and have the chance to share her music with you.
