YOU CAN REPOST IT AS COMMENT in the DIARY
WHEN YOU FIND SOMETHING in the DIARY that you LIKE
THE PERSON who MAKES the FIRST COMMENT WILL GET TWO CRITTERS
(Or NOT As the CASE MAY BE)
YOU WILL FIND in the DIARIES a LOT of POLITICS

I felt it when I went to bed last night and when I woke up this morning. I slept great. The tide has turned. We are clearly winning. Don’t stop now! Today’s Shade has been easy to write.
I don’t like long diaries. Sorry. It’s been a busy day.

I think Whiskey Pete is really, literally becoming a distraction for Trump and he’ll be out before the week is up. Golly, that’s too bad. He gave up a cushy job lying on Fox for this.
Via Politico, another former staffer dishes. Opinion | Former Top Pentagon Spokesperson Details ‘Month From Hell’ Inside the Agency
It’s been a month of total chaos at the Pentagon. From leaks of sensitive operational plans to mass firings, the dysfunction is now a major distraction for the president — who deserves better from his senior leadership. President Donald Trump has a strong record of holding his top officials to account. Given that, it’s hard to see Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth remaining in his role for much longer.✂️

Self-Reportation: Pete Hegseth’s Witch Hunt Ensnared Himself
As I wrote here, three top Pete Hegseth aides were ousted (most reports continue to use the passive voice) last week, purportedly in the witch hunt he started to look for the sources of various suspected leaks. Longtime Trump press aide John Ullyot also resigned or was asked to, depending on whom you believe. That seems to have precipitated the exposure — first by NYT — that Whiskey Pete Hegseth had a second Signal chat, one he himself curated. Although the list, which dates back to before Hegseth’s confirmation, purports to convey administrative and scheduling details, Hegseth included roughly the same Houthi attack information that he shared on the Signal thread that included Jeffrey Goldberg. That means he shared it with people who didn’t have a need to know — his brother and his lawyer, Tim Parlatore — and his spouse, who is not a DOD employee at all (even though she babysits him in important meetings).✂️ There’s increasing reason to believe that the witch hunt Hegseth initiated on March 21 led to this place — has created and is creating more risk going forward. That is, it increasingly looks like the paranoid witch hunt that Hegseth started in March may now ensnare him personally, if no other way than making those targeted willing to share secrets they were otherwise keeping about Hegseth but now have incentive to share to exonerate themselves.✂️ Which brings me to a point I’ve obsessed about since the beginning. The witch hunt, as laid out by Joe Kasper, was never designed to be a normal leak investigation. For those, you make a referral right away to the FBI, describing the suspected leak and providing a list of all the people known to have access to the leaked material. Instead, this leak investigation envisioned a report for Whiskey Pete, and referrals by Kasper if he discovered leakers he wanted to face further investigation.✂️
That is such a great article. I recommend you you read it when you have the time.
Well, it is rapid response anyway…
x The Trump White House rapid response account accidentally retweeted a report that Hegseth is on his way out

x People spend a lot of time wondering why the left is worse at using independent media to control the national narrative. A useful exercise is to ask why the left is also worse at selling snake oil and pyramid schemes, because I think the reasons are basically exactly the same. — Hank Green (@hankgreen.bsky.social) April 20, 2025 at 8:31 PM

For someone who is not Catholic, not a Christian really, I’ve spent a lot of time in Catholic churches. Having played bass at literally hundreds of masses, the Pope’s passing touches me because he was such a breath of fresh air from his immediate predecessors.
x The pope was a strong advocate for the poor and the environment and a towering figure on the world stage, addressing not just Catholics but the men and women of our time.

x Does Project 2025 say Trump gets to pick the new Pope now too? — The Tennessee Holler (@thetnholler.bsky.social) April 21, 2025 at 9:41 AM
x I have no doubt the lecture fell on unlistening ears and an unwilling mind. Our vice president was there purely for a photo op with the Pope. He got it, and sadly for our vice president, that's all he will take away from meeting a better man than he. It's all he was capable of taking away from it.

90-Day Report Card: Trump's 93 Campaign Promises
The day after the election, I rewatched each of the policy videos Trump recorded and posted on his website during the campaign. Each of these he promised on video, and repeated them at rallies and in interviews. At the 90-day mark of his term, I reviewed each promise to see which he has kept and which he has broken. This article is in place of my usual Weekend Bulletin. The daily Today in Politics bulletins will resume tomorrow. Trump’s campaign promises on video are in italics.✂️
The long and the short of it is that the only promises he appears to have kept relate to tax cuts for billionaires.

DHL suspends high value US deliveries over tariffs
DHL Express is suspending deliveries to the US worth more than $800 (£603) because of a "significant increase" in red tape at customs following the introduction of Donald Trump's new tariff regime. The delivery giant said it will temporarily stop shipments from companies in all countries to American consumers on Monday "until further notice". It added that business-to-business shipments will still go ahead, "though they may also face delays". Previously, packages worth up to $2,500 could enter the US with minimal paperwork but due to tighter customs checks that came into force alongside Trump's tariffs earlier this month, the threshold has been lowered.✂️

Why These Hawaii Travelers Were Jailed And Deported
Two young German travelers expected their Hawaii trip to be the highlight of a months-long world adventure. Instead, their visit ended in handcuffs, jail time, and deportation — a stark reminder of the risks some international visitors face at U.S. borders.✂️
This is messed up. Also, today ends in the letter ‘y’.

A very brief, potentially useless, tech tip:
I am hitting BlueSky more and more. In one previous visit it was all gloom and doom and seriously bummed me out. I’d been wondering if I changed my behavior if I could change what the algorithm fed me. I think I found something this morning. I haven’t tested it, but there is something you can easily do to potentially influence the algorithm. Click on the three dots and “Show more like this.”
