We love nuanced arguments. We want to consider how any given policy will affect absolutely every constituency. Whenever we are tempted to make a blanket statement, we hesitate because we realize that there are exceptions. We shy away from absolutes.
But failure to appeal to voters who are interested in nuance is not the reason we lose elections. We lose elections because we don’t engage the swing-voter who can be swayed by a well-crafted sound bite. In the face of the short attention span of many people today, any argument longer than a paragraph is probably a loser. In this brief column, I will attempt to drill down to the simple question, circumstance, or calculation that gets to the heart of the matter – the fact that is so simple that it can be comprehended by a bug.
Republicans claim they want to return control of schools to local communities, so the schools will be more responsive to local concerns. They claim that local control of schools will lead to greater efficiency. And there are many MAGA voters who do want the authority to see that their children are not exposed to liberal ideas. But the Trump administration’s espousal of these concepts is a smoke screen. What they really want is a less educated population. They “love the poorly educated” who can be convinced to vote against their own self-interest. And they drool over “the army of millions and millions of human beings screwing in little screws to make iPhones.” The simple fact is that the oligarchs crave a school system that will produce a poorly educated populace that will work cheap and vote MAGA.
