I am an ordinary Joe in extra ordinary times. I love two things outside of my family it’s trains and hiking both draw me to my happy space. Recently my kids and wife gave me a number of Amtrak gift cards so I could take a trip or trips to somewhere in America on a train. Yes I won the lottery so I purchased a 30 day pass to see America in a loop, 10 segments of pure joy. Today is Easter a special day in the Christian faith my third day on segment two of my journey from a Seattle to Chicago. Our train is five hours behind schedule but no one seems to care as the landscape rolls by no one complains we take naps, share stories in the club car smile and nod at each other. Today I saw something extra ordinary that called to me and renews your faith in people. Rolling back to two days earlier a couple got on the train after us earlier seat grabbers to get the just right window seat to see the mighty landscape of the northern most western states. As this family joined us the car attendant directed us to reseat so the family could sit together. Needless to say I was upset as were others but we compiled. As the train pulled out I realized the parents were hearing impaired so all verbal communication was thrust on the children little ones oldest maybe 7 or 8 impressive. So I lost my prime seat but my heart went out to this family. Dave who is now my seat mate from Chicago was coming from a camping trip with a friend on the Washington state coast. He and I had allot in common so a good seat match which I enjoyed. Overnight I was given another seat so Dave could have some room and we talked at fresh air breaks. This morning is Easter while walking to club car I see Dave with a huge bag of M & M’s placing them in cups as he wants those wonderful kids to have Easter Baskets made with whatever you can find on an Amtrak train so I joined him purchased everything we could find to fashion Easter Baskets for these children who were the voices of their parents and so happy. Easter is about rebirth to me and today after 67 years on this planet I was finally renewed In faith for my fellow man. Also note everybody involved looked different not the same race nor creed just people doing good no hangups.Lets all do better.
