Teach-ins: 1933 Nazi Germany and 2025 United States of America [1]

While thinking about measures that we can take to resist Trump and his authoritarian regime, I remembered the Teach-ins that occurred during the 1960’s as an act of resistance against the Vietnam war. Although those teach-ins were broad in scope and encompassed the history of the war from origins to present day, as well as connected issues such as the draft, the role of educational institutions in society, and further steps for resisting, I think a more focused teach-in could be another useful tool in our fight. I would focus on the terrifying parallels between the events today and the events in Nazi Germany in the 1930’s. For me, those parallels are what make the present day situation so dire. We have seen all of this before. We know how it starts. We know how it unfolds. And, we know where it leads.
I am suggesting teach-ins, or something similar, to try to instill the urgency that we must all feel. We all must understand that we are on a well known road to disaster and the loss of our country as we have known it. Teaching the parallels can be an effective way to inspire that sense of immediacy. I say that because being shown those parallels (by posts here and elsewhere) is what most energized me in actually doing something (participating in the Hands Off demonstration on April 5, recruiting friends to participate in demonstrations, increasing donations to the ACLU, and…writing this diary, my first).
An effective presentation of the parallels between Nazi Germany and Trump’s agenda might educate others who have not recognized on their own (as I did not) the imminent threat to our democracy. It could also stoke enthusiasm for action as it did for me. Seeing our country so closely resemble 1930’s Germany is horrifying. I want everyone to see what seems so clear to me and this may be another step in that direction.
