May 1st –A Day to Say “Make America Moral Again “ [1]

May 1 is National Day of Prayer. This is a day designated by the United States Congress and held on the first Thursday of May, when people are asked "to turn to God in prayer and meditation". The US president is required by law to sign a proclamation each year, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day, I’m sure Donald Trump is eager to do this task: it will be his opportunity to tell the nation once again how God rescued him from a bullet because God hates liberals and the press. He can even try to out-do his hate-filled Easter tirade. Yes, the most immoral of US presidents will be telling the nation to pray!

I am here suggesting that we who take pride in considering ourselves as “woke” rise up on National Day of Prayer with a public event calling out the immorality of the Trump Administration: I call it MAKE AMERICA MORAL AGAIN.

I am definitely not here to present any argument as to whether or not National Day of Prayer violates the Constitution’s separation of church and government, nor do I see this public event as being an attack on religion in any manner. I am simply saying that since we have this quasi-official religious day, let us use it as an opportunity to express our belief that the Trump Administration is acting in ways we regard as utterly immoral, unethical, wrong.

It doesn’t take up much meditation or prayer time to come up with examples: cutting off USAID funding is killing people; firing tens of thousands of federal workers is bankrupting many and taking valuable services from those most in need; encouraging fossil fuel consumption is adding to global warming and threatening the well-being of life on earth. And that’s not even touching on things Trump sending immigrants to El Salvador hell-holes, abandoning Ukraine, or putting an anti-vaxxer in charge of the nation’s health.

Let’s use May 1 to publicly gather, discuss and proclaim our opposition to the immoral actions of the Trump Administration. May 1 is less than two weeks away, but it’s not too late to organize a local event, maybe something during the lunch hour or immediately after work.

Here in rural Missouri—Trump country for sure--I and others who are outraged by Trump’s evil ways will be meeting outside the St. Francois County Courthouse from noon until 2 PM. I will be holding a sign, perhaps one that reads “Make America Moral Again”. Maybe someone will come carrying a sign that says “Restore Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to the public discourse”. Perhaps there will be one that says “I Pray for the Ukrainians”, or quote Episcopalian Bishop Budde who lectured Donald Trump with her sermon after his inauguration, saying "In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy on the people in our country who are scared now." I would hope some of the religious community will be participating by holding sings, maybe ones reading “Jesus said help the poor” or “God Created Diversity”. “God Wants US to be Inclusive.”

We can make National Day of Prayer a day for speaking out against an immoral administration. If you can, organize an event at a Courthouse in your county, maybe in front of a Church, along a highway, or maybe just put a sign outside your house. Help spread the word about this being a woke event. It doesn’t matter where or what time of day, or for how long; what matters is that people not be intimidate or why in stating that what’s going on is wrong. It’s immoral. Do it in a peaceful (prayer-like if you please)
