“This Is What Democracy Looks Like”: Protest Erupts at Fort Stanwix

I was on the ground at Fort Stanwix as hundreds gathered to protest what they say is President Trump’s attack on civil rights, democracy, and the rule of law. In a city as conservative as Rome, this was more than a protest — it was a shockwave.
Organized by Indivisible Mohawk Valley, the Rome Democratic Committee, and the Oneida County Women’s Democratic Committee, the crowd was loud, diverse, and unflinching. Signs slammed deportations without due process, cuts to Medicare and Social Security, and efforts to erase LGBTQ voices.
“This is a line in the sand,” one protester told me. “We won’t be ruled by fear.”
The symbolism was powerful — protesters rallying at a Revolutionary War site to fight what they see as authoritarianism in real time. If this energy can rise up in Rome, NY, protesters hope democracy can be saved in the United States.
