History is Ugly

It is not meant to soothe you and put you to sleep, it is not a fairy tale. And mind you even bedtime stories and fairy tales have monsters and horror along with saviors and vanquishing evil.

History is not supposed to only highlight the positive sides of your past, that would be like writing a biography of a cancer survivor and never mentioning their struggles with the disease.

History, is meant to shame you and elevate you, to make you shake your head and make you smile, it is a recount of your struggles to get where you are today. In that sense the bad stuff is more important than the good stuff. History is a teaching tool, a guide, a reminder of things we don’t want to repeat. History is UGLY. It is meant to be raw unvarnished truth. And that’s ugly as hell for any country.

You cannot write history and pretty it up, then it’s not history but a fictional tale, with fictional heroes. Real heroes are human beings and they have flaws, they are not perfect, they are not all wise and they make mistakes. What’s hilarious in all this talk of history is that countries clean up their own but dump on other countries. Want to learn history? Read your history in other countries descriptions of your actions. Hell read books written by average people in that era. Read how they describe everyday life in the background of some romantic story.

Until the US can admit to the atrocious actions it’s done in the past, it will never redress them and if you do not redress them, you will never have the heroic ending you so desire! The Hero must redress the wrongs, see justice done! If you do not admit to wrong, how are you a hero?
