Anti-Capitalist Meetup: Easter Hope [1]

The world is upside down, not for the first time, but we now wake up to a nightmare every morning in a way that American citizens have never had to do in my lifetime.
Simultaneously, my personal life has been upended by crisis after crisis for a year and a half. My heart and body are broken because of this onslaught.
Honestly, I forgot I had to write this diary because of continuing illness this week until my phone reminded me.
Today, I woke up quite late (because of said illness) to find my precious kitty missing. I am writing this from my sick bed while waiting for my sweet kitty to find her way home. So it is that I may have lost the love of my life and my dearest familiar, Violet the cat, in the same four month period.
So this diary will record my thoughts of the past few days concerning the maga crisis, something so unnecessary so as to be unbelievable in its practical outlines. Even for those of us who knew all along what 47’s election would mean, even for us who understood, the speed at which this is happening allows none of us a peaceful morning if we check in with the larger world.
Humans could be living in a golden age right now, but human stupidity has rejected that alternative future in favor of living death. This reality I will never understand. That stupidity should rule when there is such an abundance of brilliance and creativity and even love in the human community makes no sense. Something wicked this way has come and now sits upon our collective heads like an hallucination of hell.
Yesterday, as I checked my usual sources for the latest read on the world at large, I had the sense that the ground had shifted in favor of life, not death.
Millions protested yesterday, after millions protested two weeks ago, after thousands had protested in between.
47 has lost the support of a portion of the oligarchs who had lined up behind him because his tariffs were arranged so stupidly as to shock and harm even those oligarchs. There is nothing really positive in that conclusion. They are not with we the people and never were, but they are stepping back a bit.
Two days ago the execrable David Brooks of the NYTimes ended his column by quoting, wait for it, Karl Marx. as the last line of his column. “We have nothing to lose but our chains.”
Indeed, there are “more things in heaven and earth than are dreamed of in our philosophy” if David Brooks can call for an uprising, there is some hope in this world:
Short term: Stop Trump. Foil his efforts. Pile on the lawsuits. Turn some of his followers against him. The second is a long-term vision of a fairer society that is not just hard on Trump, but hard on the causes of Trumpism — one that offers a positive vision.
We have to define the terms of our vision as we revolt against MAGA. So what do we hope for? We need to make these hopes concrete in a way we never have before. Phrases like, “Liberty and Justice for All” are insufficient to our time and place. We need concrete words that leave no room vile misinterpretation although even the clearest possible words are being ignored, e.g. The Fourteenth Amendment, birthright citizenship.
All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.
I have, since the felon’s first administration, had a idea for a new pamphlet like Thomas Paine’s Common Sense. I finally started fleshing it out from my sick bed in the past two weeks. It is, most definitely, not ready for prime time. But it is coalescing around a few themes: a broken democracy; corrupt leadership; a renewed focus on education, the false god of extreme wealth; imagining a new economic system; addressing racism and sexism; finding a spirituality which fosters a genuine moral compass, not arbitrary commandments; developing optimism rooted in wisdom and the knowledge that to be without hope is to be allied with death.
So hope with me today by responding with your visions for how our world should be. Let us forget the dystopia we are living in for a few minutes at least.
Please share with us your hopes and visions for how we should face the days we have left on this planet, for the world we should be building, not the world we have been handed out of the death wish of the worst of us.
p.s. please hope with me that Violet, a black kitty with green eyes who loves with every fiber of her being, will come home to me lest so that I do not have to endure still another huge hit to my heart in so short a time.
