Bug Brain Simple: Trump’s war on regulation and red tape is a fraud [1]

We love nuanced arguments. We want to consider how any given policy will affect absolutely every constituency. Whenever we are tempted to make a blanket statement, we hesitate because we realize that there are exceptions. We shy away from absolutes.

But failure to appeal to voters who are interested in nuance is not the reason we lose elections. We lose elections because we don’t engage the swing-voter who can be swayed by a well-crafted sound bite. In the face of the short attention span of many people today, any argument longer than a paragraph is probably a loser. In this brief column, I will attempt to drill down to the simple question, circumstance, or calculation that gets to the heart of the matter – the fact that is so simple that it can be comprehended by a bug.

Trump routinely declares that he will make America more efficient and wealthier by reducing the regulation and red tape that strangles American business. One of his first acts was to sign an emergency order that has now led the Army Corps of Engineers to announce an expedited review (and probable approval) of the Enbridge Line 5 oil and gas pipeline tunnel under the Straits of Mackinac. But this love of red tape cutting is belied by the announcement from the Department of the Interior that the Empire Wind 1 offshore project will be halted for further study. Trump is not interested in eliminating rules. He’s fine with a rule that lets him do what he wants to do, He just wants to be the one to make the rules so that they benefit the people he likes and hurt the people he dislikes. Trump actually quite likes regulations that disenfranchise voters, hobble abortion providers, and determine what bathroom people are allowed to use.
