We Better Not Throw Away Our Shot [1]

The crisis is coming. Likely within a month the Supreme Court will tell the administration that they are required by the Constitution to do something, and they will say, in effect, “Make me.” (My guess is that it will be related to the disappearances to El Salvador.) There is one and only one Constitutional way to make them, and that is to impeach the president. I believe there are enough Republicans in the House who are horrified by what is happening that they will be able to pull this off. It might not even take too long, since the evidence is in plain sight. I am less convinced that there are enough Republicans in the Senate who would vote to convict. This group of Senators is probably even more right-wing than the last group that refused to convict over Jan 6, where the evidence was also undeniable. The saving grace is that that time there was clear evidence that he did it, and most Republicans did not deny it, but the argument was over whether the offense was sufficient to rise to impeachment. This time, with a direct violation of a Supreme Court order, that problem should be less of an issue. Nevertheless, I am pessimistic that there will be 20 Republican Senators who would vote for conviction.
But here’s what concerns me the most: we get one shot at this. If the Senate does not convict, then the Republican Congressmen who voted to impeach, and the Republican Senators who voted to convict, will start to disappear. It will only take one or two before every vote in both bodies is unanimous support for the president. At that point the crisis will be over, and we will have our very own Hitler.
