Is Racism Hate?
Let’s get something clear at the start, this is a text about whether or not Racism is Hate or something else, they are my musings on the topic, if you want to discuss that fine, but if you come here trying to not all white people or why did you say you, or any other nonsense that has nothing to do with the subject I’ll probably just ignore you.
A stray remark caught my ear today and something clicked about people’s reaction to being called racist or being told “this is racist”. And, I think it’s also the reason they think that Black folks hate them. Now, most Black folks do not hate white people, we may be frustrated with you, angry at times, dislike you, and yes some may even hate your demographic, but mostly we are just beyond frustrated not with you on a personal level, but with your demographic.
Back to the title, is racism Hate? To me, racism (the American kind) is more like condescension and contempt even, for certain there are racists that hate us (I’ve written bout that), but I think the majority of racists just look down on us. That’s why the whole “unqualified” thing was so easy to swallow, because consciously or not they simply don’t think we can be as good or better than them at anything (despite evidence to the contrary mind you).
And again this goes back to culture and representation, growing up seeing doctors, lawyers, presidents, heroes, etc… constantly portrayed as white, while Black and Brown folks are usually portrayed as comic relief, poor, gangbangers, thieves etc… does cement the perception that “those” people are just not that smart even in the minds of allies, which is probably why they tend to think of allyship as “saving” the needy, like a charity thing.
That would explain why they don’t see things they do as racist, like “they should have just complied/obeyed”, that is something you say to a child, not a peer. Especially when they cheer the defiance of their own in the same situations, viewing them as standing up to power. The same observation can be made of the calls for us to be patient, we’re making progress, it’s like telling a child “wait til you grow up, you’re not old enough yet”.
The interesting thing is, the growing resentment of the average white person, at being told they are in fact racist or their actions racist, can actually be turning what is for now condescension into full blown hate. What a dilemma. It’s again the children’s treatment, children should not school their elders, children should be grateful for what they receive, children should be seen and not heard. When you think about it, most of the complaints against us, fall into one of these categories. We should be grateful for Blacks folks have it better in the US than anywhere else. We should be quiet because we’re making progress. We shouldn’t talk back to them because they’re helping us.
Like I’ve said, until the representation of minorities is changed and overtakes the old ones, we are not going to achieve a racism free society and that will take decades if not centuries more because every time we do actually make real progress, it is followed by new methods of repression that set us back decades.
