From Reuters:
“Oh we’re going to make a deal," Trump said from the White House in response to a reporter's question about picking up the phone to call China's President Xi Jinping. "I think we are going to make a very good deal with China."
Translation:
“I am going to cave.
I am going to cave bigly.
It will be the biggest, most wonderful cave of all.
Strong men with guns will be moved to tears in my cave.
Please sir, can I have a fig leaf so I can cave bigly in my big cave !!
Earlier this week, China announced a cancellation of aircraft contracts with Boeing.
Notice the difference ?
Trump has backed down in recent days over tariffs on imports of electronic products including mobile phones and semiconductor chips, pending a review already under way of trade involving the latter.
China is aware, however, that those tariffs on these industries, while they have a broad effect on Chinese manufacturing, will be primarily noticed by American consumers paying more for products and US import companies. Its own targeted measures can hit big American companies such as Boeing while allowing Chinese firms to order from America’s rivals — in this case, Airbus. China is also certain to use the Boeing ban as a prime moment to push its own up-and-coming, state-owned rival, Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac).
Trump’s tariffs are designed to hurt Americans, while Chinese retaliation is designed to benefit China. That's the difference. And everyone with >2 functional neurons can see that.
Under the circumstances, there is no prize for guessing who is going to cave.
Xi Xingping has spent a decade running circles around the globe actually negotiating deals. He know how its done. (use the English translate tab on your browser)
On November 13, 2017, in front of this small wooden building, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and President of China, gave Nguyen Phu Trong, then General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, a gift - the 19th issue of the People's Daily. One of the front pages of the People's Daily published a speech by Ho Chi Minh: "There is no doubt that the friendship and close relationship between our peoples are eternal and unbreakable, and cannot be separated or obstructed by anyone." "The friendship between Vietnam and China is deep, and comrades and brothers." General Secretary Xi Jinping has repeatedly quoted President Ho Chi Minh's popular poem. Wandering in front of the high-footed house of Ho Chi Minh's former residence, it seems that you can feel the friendship between China and Vietnam through time and space. China is committed to promoting the joint construction of a community of shared future around the periphery, and will continue to witness the new "highlight moment" of Sino-Etnam friendship in the new era.
How hard would it have been for a US President to visit Vietnam, and to talk about how Ho Chi Minh drew inspiration from the American revolution ? If you want to isolate China, then that is the type of stuff you should have been doing. But it seems like the Chinese have been the ones laying the groundwork for this. Notice the date on that story… from November 2017.
As it so happens, Trump’s trade war coincides with a previously scheduled ASEAN meeting, with Malaysia as rotating chair. Xi had this to say:
"To build a community with a shared future for mankind, we must first start from Asia." The three nodes mark the firm pace of China's promotion of building a community of common destiny around the area today.
I am giving this 6 months. By then, the resistance will be so powerful that Trump will be a lame duck.
