When I say I’m allergic to mosquitoes, lots of people say ohh yeah me too! But here’s the thing, what they are calling allergy is a little red dot and some itching what I call allergy is much worse, the site swells up and spreads and a whole lot of itching, sometimes I scratch my skin out… I once got bit in the eye and once in the throat, I’ll let you imagine what huge lumps can do in those areas. And I’m allergic to 29 allergens that we know of.
But this is not a text really about allergies, it’s about what perspective and what you choose to focus on. I’d wager that the reason people got upset with the phrase “you keep thinking about money” isn’t because they thought I was addressing them directly (cause that’s ridiculous) but because they were actually concerned about money and felt a finger was pointing at them that was your perspective of my writing.
Have you ever realized that even your perspective is a privilege? You do not have the experience to even conceive a different reality than the one you live in for you’ve never known anything else. When you are told to walk in someone’s shoes, the point isn’t to put on their shoes, but to live their lives for a while. That you had the audacity to complain about the use of a word in an article warning you about the dangers of dictatorship is a privilege. From your perspective, the word you and the fact that it might apply to you was a greater threat than your pending authoritarian regime. Ain’t that something.
From my perspective, while you (and I do mean you this time) decry the conduct of trump & co, and while you agree in theory that yes you are sliding into authoritarianism, in reality your conscious or subconscious is still running on “it can’t happen here”, or at the very least it won’t be so bad. After all as one commentator said he lived under a dictator and life went on as normal for most people.
From your perspective, I’m unable to take criticism, from mine what you’re doing is not criticism. From your perspective, you’re not being condescending, from mine you are. From your perspective, you were criticizing me, from mine you were being childish and picky.
I tried to warn you of the dangers coming and what did you choose to focus on? Your personal self-decided outrage over your assumption that I was addressing you individually about concerns for money. Tell me did you flinch? Did you feel just a little sting reading that phrase? Then I guess you are right, I was talking about you. See I can admit when I’m wrong, don’t make you shine in perspective but hey at least I was wrong, you did take it personally, because it was personal.
