The authoritarian is tearing up the fabric of our society as quickly as he can, so he and his fascist followers can gain a permanent grip on power. The only way the United States survives this crisis is by removing him from office, and Friday (tomorrow) is a day of action for doing just that.
Participants in the citizens' impeachment movement are starting a push tomorrow to phone and write their members of Congress, encouraging their reps to get on board with impeaching and removing the would-be dictator. Of necessity, this is a bipartisan project.
You can help get your own rep on board. Call and write them with an instruction to impeach! Also link up with others who are doing the same by signing on with citizens' impeachment to let them know you're helping.
With Congress on recess during the next two weeks, there are opportunities to put the impeachment question to your rep at a town hall. This is how we learned last week that Rep. Becca Balint (VT) is ready to impeach.
Constituent: "Do you support the concept of impeachment?" Rep. Balint: "Oh, my gosh, this is the most corrupt president we've ever had! Absolutely!" << answered by loud applause from the town hall audience >>
The impeachment project is getting more coverage too. Writing for MSNBC, Andy Craig noted the effort's progress and dispelled some objections.
The theory of a backlash in Trump’s favor has no real evidence. There was no such reaction against his first impeachment, after which Democrats went on to win a trifecta in the next election, or the second, after which Democrats beat expectations even with an unpopular president in 2022. Similarly, the idea that it’s “too soon” since last year’s election would amount to giving presidents license to destroy the Constitution so long as they do it promptly. It is a severe failure of imagination to think his public support is some static fact of nature, or that the present crisis will not continue to escalate.
The number of congressional reps on board is growing. As indicated by their personal statements or by their communication directors, there are now 11 reps who will vote to impeach:
Representative Becca Balint (VT) Suzanne Bonamici, OR-01 "I voted to impeach Donald Trump twice during his last presidency and would do so again. There is compelling evidence that he has committed more impeachable offenses during this administration, including violating the Constitutional rights of people in this country and ignoring the rule of law." Maxine Dexter, OR-03 "I will not stand by while our democracy is eroded. I support impeachment because no one is above the law, and Trump's past and present actions must be met with real consequences." Dwight Evans, PA-03 TX-09, Al Green, TX-09 "The movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring Articles of Impeachment against the president." Hank Johnson, Jr., GA-04 Sam Liccardo, CA-16 Ilhan Omar, MD-05 Shri Thanedar, MI-13 Rashida Tlaib, MI-12 Maxine Waters, CA-43
Meanwhile, more people are getting their letters to the editor published.
