Earlier this week, President Trump criticized Ukraine by saying, “You don’t start a war with someone who’s 20 times your size and then hope people give you some missiles.”
I found this to be ironic since on April 19th 250 years ago, our forebearers did exactly that. King George III had applied tariffs to tea and other staples. He had removed judges who disagreed with his policies, and he sent thousands of troops to occupy Massachusetts. When his army marched into the countryside to arrest Colonial leaders, humble farmers stood their ground against the mightiest army in the World. We all cherish this memory.
My hometown had only 25 houses in 1775 and sent 38 men to join what we now call the Battles of Lexington and Concord. Three of them died that day.
Those patriots entered a war with a nation 20 times its size . We would not have the United States without their willingness to fight for their independence and what became our democracy. They also received the ‘missiles’ of the day and money from France, Spain, and the Netherlands. Freedom needs friends.
Is Ukraine no different? Are the brave Ukrainians fighting for anything less important? Does their bravery not compel us to offer weapons to aid them in their cause? Is their freedom not as important as ours? Is the tyrant they oppose not as vile an oppressor? Do they not deserve our support?
Mr.Trump mocks the sacrifices of the Ukrainian people by claiming they fight for a hopeless cause. As we remember those embattled farmers from 1775 later this week and look forward to celebrating the Declaration of Independence in 2026, we should realize that Donald Trump would have sided with King George and been on the other side.
