I regret to say I have bitten off more than I can chew. Creating the Overnight News Digest is harder than it looks. Right now I am committed to doing six a month, two each on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. I sincerely hope some of you will step up and take over the ONDs. I am sorry I can't keep doing these but I lack the stamina. (I will continue doing them till others stand up.)
Please message me for more info.

“Safe” Plant-Based Plastics Linked to Organ Damage
Starch-based biodegradable plastics may cause organ damage and metabolic issues, raising concerns about their safety despite being considered eco-friendly. Plastic products gradually break down through wear and tear, releasing tiny, often microscopic, plastic particles that may pose health risks if inhaled or ingested. To address this, researchers have developed biodegradable plastics made from plant starch rather than petroleum. However, a preliminary study published in ACS’ Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that animals exposed to particles from these plant-based plastics experienced health issues, including liver damage and disruptions to their gut microbiome. "Biodegradable starch-based plastics may not be as safe and health-promoting as originally assumed,” says Yongfeng Deng, the corresponding author of the study. ***

'This is so hard': The Chinese small businesses brought to a standstill by Trump's tariffs
"Trump is a crazy man," says Lionel Xu, who is surrounded by his company's mosquito repellent kits – many were once best sellers in Walmart stores in the United States. Now those products are sitting in boxes in a warehouse in China and will remain there unless President Donald Trump lifts his 145% tariffs on all Chinese goods bound for the US. "This is so hard for us," he adds. Around half of all products made by his company Sorbo Technology are sold to the US. It is a small company by Chinese standards and has around 400 workers in Zhejiang province. But they are not alone in feeling the pain of this economic war. "We are worried. What if Trump doesn't change his mind? That will be a dangerous thing for our factory," says Mr Xu. ***

Landmark legal victory grants relief to 350,000 TPS holders across the U.S.
A crucial court ruling on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) has brought a wave of relief to nearly 350,000 families in the U.S., ensuring that they will continue to have protection from deportation and the ability to work legally in the country. The decision follows a contentious legal battle that brought together community advocates, legal experts, and plaintiffs who fought to continue TPS, a humanitarian program benefiting individuals from countries ravaged by violence, disaster, or war. In federal court in northern California, U.S. District Court Judge Ed Chen ruled in favor of a nationwide order postponing Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem’s cancellation of the 18-month TPS for Venezuelans that was issued in 2021 and 2023. The decision in National TPS Alliance v. Noem came down on March 31 and provides a reprieve to Venezuelans, who can now retain their legal status and work authorization until October 2026. ***

Whooping cough cases soar by 1,500% leaving two dead and health experts concerned it could be next outbreak
Cases of the highly contagious bacterial infection are rising across the US as vaccine rates decline. State and local health officials are seeing skyrocketing cases of whooping cough, and experts are sounding the alarm it could join the outbreak of measles in impacting thousands of Americans. Cases of the highly contagious bacterial infection have reportedly risen by more than 1,500 percent nationwide since 2021. Cases of whooping cough have been high in measles-stricken Texas, with the Laredo Public Health Department reporting more cases there than all of last year. “We’ve seen more cases of whooping cough this year in Laredo than in the past few years,” Dr. Richard Chamberlain, director of Laredo Public Health told The Laredo Morning Times. “This isn’t just happening in Laredo; other places in Texas are also seeing more cases. Right now, we’re keeping a close eye on it. There’s no need to panic, but it’s important to stay informed and take simple steps to help keep everyone safe.” ***
This would be a good time to get vaccinated against measles and whooping cough.
And here is some good news to end on.
