.."requested anonymity for fear of retribution." [1]

In the last 3 months I have seen this line at the end of every sentence in almost every media article I've read that quotes any administration official regarding a trump admin action, regardless of how tremendous or minor the impact of such action may be.
Like, what kinda retribution are we talkin' heah Donnie, are we talkin' "Sleepin' wit da Fishes", or just gettin' moved to da Death List at Social Security?
Does anyone recall this being a "normal" disclaimer by the press when they're interviewing anyone related to a typical news story of any import, like ever? It gets thrown onto the end of every damn quote I've read like salt and pepper on dinner. The only one that comes close is "blah blah who chose to remain anonymous because they weren't authorized to speak publicly about"...literally anything.
We pay these people to do their jobs and keep us informed about how they're doing just that. And not ONE single time have I seen in any of this reporting "...for fear of retribution, WHICH IS REALLY F'D THE F UP, because WHY should public servants, who are paid with our tax dollars to do their job and tell us he truth about what they're doing have to fear RETRIBUTION for actually doing their JOB?!?!"
Why is this phrase being normalized? Not one time have I seen its use called out on any network in the last 3 months.
"Nice network you got there, be a shame if something happened to it..."
