It’s Tax Day, so let’s take a look at where our tax dollars go and envision a different allocation based on what Granite Staters actually want.
In 2024, the average taxpayer in New Hampshire contributed $19,543 in federal income taxes, a sum that reveals the intricate tapestry of our national priorities.
Of this considerable sum, $4,078.67 was funneled into the maw of war and weapons. That’s a staggering allocation that includes $3,222.45 for the Pentagon and $671.28 for military personnel. This expenditure stands in stark contrast to the $895.32 devoted to education, a domain that shapes the minds of our future. Is it not a travesty that the pursuit of knowledge, the very foundation of progress, receives a mere fraction of what is lavished upon instruments of destruction?
The tendrils of this misallocation stretch further, ensnaring $4,850.75 in health-related expenditures, which, though substantial, pale when juxtaposed with the insatiable appetite of our war machine. This disparity begs the question: can we, in good conscience, continue to feed the beast of war while our children go to bed hungry for knowledge, and our sick languish without adequate care?
Imagine, if you will a world where our tax dollars are the lifeblood of human flourishing rather than the sustenance of conflict. Redirecting even a fraction of the $4,078.67 currently earmarked for war and weapons could revolutionize our approach to education and healthcare. Picture schools where creativity blooms, where teachers are revered and well-compensated, where classrooms are sanctuaries of learning. Envision hospitals where healing is an art, where patients are met with compassion, and where the latest technologies are harnessed for the greater good.
This vision is not a mere daydream but a tangible possibility, a call to arms not of weapons but of ballots and voices. Organizations like the National Priorities Project illuminate the path, shedding light on the labyrinthine corridors of federal spending and advocating for a budget that serves the many, not the few. Their work reminds us that the true measure of a nation's strength lies not in the might of its military but in the well-being of its people.
Let us then stand at the crossroads where the roads of militarism and humanism diverge. The path we choose will shape the world we leave to the next generation. Will we bequeath them a legacy of war and want, or a testament to the transformative power of peace and human dignity? The choice, as always, is ours.
