Rightwing populists will keep winning until we grasp this truth about human nature.
Economic inequality breeds resentment and a desire to get even. That’s what fuels support for even incompetent regimes.
Bingo. The traditional centrist parties [leftish and rightish] have ignored this issue, which in reality they both aided and abetted, rather than tackle it when they had the chance. It was by design.
Already, Trump has waged war on everything that builds prosperity and wellbeing: democracy, healthy ecosystems, education, healthcare, science, the arts. Yet, amid the wreckage, and despite some slippage, his approval ratings still hold between 43 and 48%: far higher than those of many other leaders. Why? I believe part of the answer lies in a fundamental aspect of our humanity: the urge to destroy that from which you feel excluded.
So, rather than joining together to wrestle power from the elite, attacking the weakest of us is much easier. How many of us cheered the ripping apart of the unions rather than reforming them? What other self-harm have we managed to commit?
I know I am on the left of the Democratic Party, but many of us here have been screaming about this for over a decade. Yet, always ignored when some other centrist is chosen. {enough about my bugbear, I might lose it, again]. Note: You must also keep your eyes open to the extreme left; they are just as autocratic.
