Teen killed parents as part of Trump assassination plot, says FBI
A high school student from Wisconsin killed his parents as part of a larger plot to assassinate US President Donald Trump, the FBI has said. Nikita Casap, 17, has been charged with the killing of his mother, Tatiana Casap, 35, and his stepfather Donald Mayer, 51, who were found dead at their home on 28 February. A newly unsealed search warrant also alleges that the suspect's phone contained material relating to a neo-Nazi group called the Order of Nine Angles and praise for Adolf Hitler. He is next due to appear in court for an arraignment - where he will be formally given the charges against him - on 7 May, according to the Waukesha County Court. He is being held on a $1m (£764,000) bond.

Three million child deaths linked to drug resistance, study shows
More than three million children around the world are thought to have died in 2022 as a result of infections that are resistant to antibiotics, according to a study by two leading experts in child health. Children in Africa and South East Asia were found to be most at risk. Antimicrobial resistance - known as AMR - develops when the microbes that cause infections evolve in such a way that antibiotic drugs no longer work. It has been identified as one of the biggest public health threats facing the world's population. The authors warn that if bacteria develop resistance to these antibiotics, there will be few, if any, alternatives for treating multidrug-resistant infections. "We estimate three million deaths of children worldwide associated with antimicrobial resistance."

Syria’s new flag is everywhere: ‘Everyone wants to touch freedom’
With scarves and capes, caps and pendants, Syrians everywhere are wrapping themselves up in the new national colors. After years of being illegal in much of the country, the “free Syria” flag – a green-white-black tricolor banner adorned with three red stars – flies in Damascus. Yet the new flag is more than a national symbol. Syrians say what was for years the opposition flag is now an embodiment of the hardships of the revolution and the joy of their newfound freedoms. The opposition flag was swiftly adopted as the new national flag when rebels ousted Bashar al-Assad from power in December. In today’s Syria, you can find it everywhere: draped on buildings, pinned to cars’ rear windows, in restaurant windows, spray-painted on the walls of Mr. Assad’s former palace, for sale at the airport’s duty-free shops.

Hedge fund billionaire says US may face ‘worse than a recession’ from Trump tariffs
Billionaire investor Ray Dalio said that he is worried the US will experience “something worse than a recession” as a result of Donald Trump’s trade policies. Speaking to NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, the 75-year-old hedge fund manager said: “I think that right now we are at a decision-making point and very close to a recession. And I’m worried about something worse than a recession if this isn’t handled well.” He went on to add: “A recession is two negative quarters of GDP and whether it goes slightly there. We always have those things. We have something that’s much more profound. We have a breaking down of the monetary order. We are going to change the monetary order because we cannot spend the amounts of money.” Despite Trump’s freezing of tariffs at 10% on all US imports except Chinese imports for 90 days, financial experts have warned that the “damage has been done,” particularly in regards to what many are calling a “rapid de-dollarisation”.

Worried about your stock market savings as Trump tariffs wreak havoc? Don’t panic
This week was enough to make anyone worried about their stock market savings. As a certified public accountant, I don’t give investment advice. But I’m comfortable leaving my money in the stock market. Why? Let’s put things into perspective. Dow Jones average is down about 15% from its high back in November. However, it’s still at the highest level it’s ever been from before late 2022. Last month the economy added more than 228,000 jobs, despite shedding hundreds of thousands of government workers One big beneficiary of lower interest rates would be the residential real estate industry – which represents up to 18% of the US economy. Many homebuyers (and sellers) have been holding back due to higher interest rates. But now that bond yields are falling, so too are mortgage rates (which are also based on future inflation) The bottom line: don’t sell your stocks. Hold firm. History shows that, unless you speculate or get lucky with an isolated home run, investing in the broad stock market via mutual and index funds generally outpaces all other investments.

‘Invasion’ barges, subsea cable cutters and surprise naval drills: how China is testing Donald Trump
In the space of just five weeks, China held live-fire drills on the doorsteps of Australia, Taiwan and Vietnam. It tested new landing barges on ships that could facilitate an amphibious assault on Taiwan. And it unveiled deep-sea cable cutters with the ability to switch off another country’s internet access – a tool no other nation admits to having. China has been flexing its maritime muscle in the Indo-Pacific to send a message of supremacy to its regional neighbours, experts say. But it’s also testing the thinking of a bigger rival further afield: Donald Trump. ut the US’s Indo-Pacific allies will want to hear those assurances from Trump, who has not shown his cards on issues like Taiwan. When asked by a journalist in February for his stance, Trump refused to be drawn and has said nothing on Taiwan since. What Trump is likely to focus on is staying competitive with China, which is ahead in areas including artificial intelligence, robotics, electric vehicles and 6G internet.

Israel’s relentless bombardment of Gaza continues, with at least 37 people killed in attacks across the Gaza Strip on Sunday, including six brothers who were volunteers providing food to starving Palestinians.

trump says he expects to make a decision on Iran very quickly
ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, April 13 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he expected to make a decision on Iran very quickly, after both countries said they held "positive" and "constructive" talks in Oman on Saturday and agreed to reconvene this week. Trump, who has threatened military action if no deal is reached on halting Iran's nuclear program, told reporters aboard Air Force One that he met with advisers on Iran and expected a quick decision. He gave no further details. "We'll be making a decision on Iran very quickly," he said. Axios cited two sources with knowledge of the issue as saying that a second round of nuclear talks between the United States and Iran would take place next Saturday in Rome. The talks held in Oman on Saturday were the first between Iran and a Trump administration, including the U.S. president's 2017-2021 first term. Officials said they took place in a "productive, calm and positive atmosphere." On Saturday, Trump told reporters the U.S.-Iran talks were going "okay," adding, "Nothing matters until you get it done, so I don’t like talking about it, but it’s going okay. The Iran situation is going pretty good, I think."

Daniel Noboa is reelected Ecuador’s president by voters weary of crime
QUITO, Ecuador (AP) — Ecuadorian voters weary of crime reelected President Daniel Noboa, a conservative young millionaire with a divisive no-holds-barred crimefighting record, by a wide margin Sunday, but his opponent vowed to seek a recount over what she described as “grotesque” electoral fraud. Figures released by Ecuador’s National Electoral Council showed Noboa receiving 55.8% of the vote with more than 92% of ballots counted, while leftist lawyer Luisa González earned 44%. Council president Diana Atamaint said those results showed an “irreversible trend” in favor of Noboa. The win gives Noboa four years to fulfill the promises he first made in 2023, when he stunned voters by winning a snap election and a 16-month presidency despite his limited political experience. “Ecuador is changing... and that path will mean our children will live better lives than we did,” Noboa told supporters during a brief speech in which he also criticized his opponent’s fraud allegations.

What we know about the suspect in the attack on the Pa. governor’s home
A 38-year-old Pennsylvania man has been taken into custody after police say they connected him to an arson attack on the official residence of Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) in the state capital of Harrisburg. Cody Balmer was arrested Sunday and is in the custody of Pennsylvania State Police, according to authorities. An affidavit had not been made public as of Sunday evening, but Dauphin County District Attorney Francis Chardo said he expected the charges to include attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson and aggravated assault on an enumerated person. Authorities said at the news conference that they did not expect Balmer to be charged with conspiracy, indicating that police suspect he carried out the arson attack alone.
