Judicial Selection - Critical, but still a wildcard [1]

As the moron in chief and his thugs manipulate the justice system to support their grabs for power and money, I couldn’t help recall the wisdom of my father-in-law, of blessed memory. He was a trial attorney who would give us suggestions on the ‘right’ judges to elect. It was always difficult to do on our own because it’s difficult to determine the backgrounds of candidates.

In my local area, the primary determinant of judicial election success has been whether a person with the same last name, or even one that sounds close, has been previously elected. But one comment from him has stuck with me.

He thought that we should elect politicians who are (truly) fiscally conservative to avoid corruption and wasteful spending. And, that we should elect judges who are (truly) liberal to give people all possible benefit of the doubt in any legal judgement involving their rights.

While there may be some alignment with Repub/Dem political parties with this approach, it’s definitely not a perfect alignment, and much less so in recent times. While my f-i-l was definitely a compassionate liberal, the marriage of these two principles aligns much more with libertarian thought than either liberalism or conservatism and is supportive my lifelong status as a political independent.
