Are You Christian Enough to Work at the State Dept? [1]

Well, that didn’t take long: State tells employees to report on one another for ‘anti-Christian bias’

The Trump administration has ordered State Department employees to report on any instances of coworkers displaying “anti-Christian bias” as part of its effort to implement a sweeping new executive order on supporting employees of Christian faith working in the federal government. The department, according to a copy of an internal cable obtained by POLITICO, will work with an administration-wide task force to collect information “involving anti-religious bias during the last presidential administration” and will collect examples of anti-Christian bias through anonymous employee report forms.

So far, only Politico seems to have the story; all other reports on this are citing Politico. I haven’t seen the cable yet.

The cable encourages State Department employees to report on one another through a tip form that can be anonymous. “Reports should be as detailed as possible, including names, dates, locations (e.g. post or domestic office where the incident occurred,” the cable reads.

There is also no reporting on what “anti-Christian bias” is supposed to look like. (When I was in 3rd grade, I refused to make a cardboard Christmas tree; does that count as anti-Christian bias? They did send me to the principal’s office and called my mother — who straightened them out in a hurry.) Apparently the cable did make a nod in the general direction of ecumenism:

“Although the E.O. focuses on anti-Christian bias, targeting anyone for their religious beliefs is discriminatory and is contrary to the Constitution” and various federal laws, the notice states.

The EO referred to is this one, from February: Eradicating Anti-Christian Bias. It makes reference to “hostility and violence” and cites as examples Biden’s proclamation of Easter Sunday as a “Transgender Day of Visibility.” Other than a passing reference to “religious freedom,” there is nothing in the order about targeting anyone other than Christians.

This is the next step in turning the United States into a Christian theocracy — at which point Mike Johnson’s Dominionists will go to war with JD Vance’s radical Catholics over who has the real keys to heaven.

Historical note: Christians were occasionally persecuted during the first three centuries of the Common Era, but almost never as much as they claimed. (The persecutions of the late 3rd century were an exception, and didn’t last long.) But ever since Christians got political power in the Roman Empire, they have cried “persecution” whenever anyone so much as suggests that maybe they should be a little bit more tolerant of other religions. Not to mention being tolerant of other branches of Christianity.
