Should We Laugh or Should We Cry? Voters are complaining about DOGE and federal budget cuts [1]

After the special election in FL-06 i needed to take a break for a bit. That doesn’t mean the work of Hope Springs from Field PAC [dated website] didn’t continue, it merely meant i wasn’t going to write about it. After more than 2 months away from my wife (having been back really only 2 months), we needed that. One of the biggest demands on Hope Springs is that we need to move from an all-volunteer organization to a more professional entity to meet other demands. Hopefully over this election cycle we can do that.

But we see some interesting data and i caught my attention. The impacts, job losses and wait times for government services have started to be reflected in our feedback from voters. Especially in Arizona and Virginia. But complaints in the Atlanta and Houston regions, as well. All these areas are considered more Republican than Democrat, but since we don’t talk to Republicans, they are coming from Democrats and Independents.

It might surprise you that voters want government to work, to work efficiently and properly on their behalf. Clearly, most voters don’t think about this until it effects them. Even voters tell us they complain more about government than appreciate it, but (as they say) you never know what you got until it’s gone.

The biggest issue (so far) has been website issues (or absences) and wait times to talk to government employees on the telephone. In the Phoenix suburbs, it has been more about hearing about someone spending hours waiting for a real person than actual experience. But seniors, especially, were scared. “They are changing the rules and there’s no way to access a real person.” These are issues/problems/complaints that work favorably for Democrats.

One of the benefits of Hope Springs’ all-election cycle canvassing effort is this early detection of the electorate’s mood and priorities. Even retired politicians will ask me what i am hearing “out there,” it’s a very common request when i talk to people in D.C. And talking to people this week, what we are hearing is that government efficiency should be about making government better, not worse. More responsive, not less. More functional, NOT BROKEN. “No one voted for this!”

Hope Springs from Field PAC began knocking on doors again on March 1st. We target Democrats and unaffiliated voters with a systematic approach that reminds them not only that Democrats care, but Democrats are determined to deliver the best government possible to all Americans. The voters we talk to continue to tell us they come away more invested in governance and feel more favorably towards Democrats in general because of our approach.

Obviously, we rely on grassroots support, so if you support field/grassroots organizing, voter registration (and follow-up) and our efforts to protect our voters, we would certainly appreciate your support:
