The Guardian: Ice director wants to run deportations like ‘Amazon Prime for human beings’
The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement said he would like the agency to implement a system of trucks that rounds up immigrants for deportation in a system similar to how Amazon delivers packages around the US. “We need to get better at treating this like a business,” the acting Ice director, Todd Lyons, said. He said that he wanted to see a deportation process “like [Amazon] Prime, but with human beings”. His comments were first reported by the Arizona Mirror. Lyons was one of a series of Trump administration speakers at the 2025 Border Security Expo at the Phoenix convention center. Other speakers were Trump’s “border czar”, Tom Homan, and the secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem.
The Guardian: ‘We are failing’: doctors and students in the US look to Mexico for basic abortion training
Since Roe was overturned, a growing number of would-be abortion providers have begun to leave the country in search of an education as training in the US dwindles O n paper, it should not be difficult for Dr Sebastian Ramos to learn to perform abortions. As a family medicine doctor, Ramos works in a specialty that frequently provides the procedure. He lives in deep-blue California, where it is still allowed. And the administrators running Ramos’s residency program – a kind of apprenticeship that US doctors must undergo to become full-fledged physicians – support Ramos’s desire to learn how to do it. But over the course of his three-year-long residency, Ramos is guaranteed just three days’ worth of training at Planned Parenthood. Residents get to participate in only a handful of abortions.
The Guardian: ‘Leave the MAGA cap at home!’ Is the world really becoming hostile to American tourists?
Name: American tourists. Age: They come in all ages – from college backpackers travelling around Europe, Asia and South America, to senior passengers on a Caribbean cruise. Appearance: Typically – make that stereotypically, and by no means universally – loud and monolingual. Now possibly less welcome. How so? You know the old thing about the problem with going anywhere is that you always take yourself? So true! Now you could say you also take your president. This is about Donald Trump? Everything is about Trump. But I thought the story was about tourists not going to America. Because they would be interrogated by ICE (United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement), have their social media histories trawled through, in case they once – in a moment of naive youthful rebellion – admitted to believing in the climate crisis, and would then face immediate deportation. True, inbound travel to the US is expected to take a hit this year. Flight bookings from Canada are well down … Hardly surprising … And bookings from Europe are also down. Britain and Germany have issued travel warnings to their citizens in the wake of some visitors’ horrific experiences.
The Guardian: Elon Musk’s xAI powering its facility in Memphis with ‘illegal’ generators
KeShaun Pearson took a seat in front of the Shelby county board of commissioners in Memphis, Tennessee, on Wednesday morning. In the gallery behind him, a small group of people held up signs that said “Our air = our lives” and “Our water, Our future.” With a manner-of-fact demeanor, Pearson addressed the commissioners. “I’m here because today we’ve learned that xAI is using 35 methane gas burning turbines,” said Pearson, who is the director of the advocacy group Memphis Community Against Pollution. “They have submitted a permit to our Shelby county health department for 15, yet they are using double that amount with no permit.” It’s been known that xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, has been using around 15 portable generators to help power its massive supercomputer in Memphis without yet securing permits. But new aerial images obtained by the Southern Environmental Law Center show that number is now far higher. The group says these gas turbines combined can generate around 420MW of electricity, enough to power an entire city. “xAI has essentially built a power plant in South Memphis with no oversight, no permitting, and no regard for families living in nearby communities,” Amanda Garcia, senior attorney for the Southern Environmental Law Center, said in a statement. “These dozens of gas turbines are doing significant harm to the air Memphians breathe every day.”
Times of India: South Korea opposition leader Lee Jae-Myung announces presidential bid after Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment
South Korea's opposition leader Lee Jae-myung announced his presidential candidacy on Thursday, claiming his commitment to address inequality and boost economic development.
The presidential election is scheduled for June 3, following the impeachment confirmation of former president Yoon Suk Yeol, who had declared martial law in December.
Through a Thursday announcement quoted by Reuters, Lee addressed economic disparity as a fundamental cause of social discord, noting its role in intensifying recent political instability following Yoon's martial law implementation. Lee, positioning himself as a practical leader, emphasised that a policy's effectiveness matters more than its originator.
Times of India: Trump signs retributory orders against ‘Anonymous’ author, former cyber chief and a law firm.
Krebs was the head of the cyber department that declared the 2020 election safe and fair.
US president Donald Trump signed two memoranda on Wednesday directing the justice department to investigate former officials Miles Taylor and Chris Krebs, while also targeting the law firm Susman Godfrey involved in litigation against his allies.
The move marks a sharp escalation in Trump’s campaign to punish critics from his first term. Taylor and Krebs had both publicly criticised Trump, with Taylor even authoring an anonymous 2018 op-ed. Both Taylor and Krebs served in Trump's first term and later became his outspoken critics. Trump also revoked any remaining security clearances for the two. Miles Taylor, a former official at the department of homeland security, became widely known after he admitted to writing a 2018 anonymous op-ed in The New York Times. The piece described internal efforts to resist Trump’s decisions, calling some of them dangerous. Taylor also published a book under the pen name “Anonymous” and revealed his identity in 2020. On Wednesday, Trump accused him of treason and spying.
Times of India: How Japan built world's first 3D-printed train station in just 6 hours
In the six hours between the departure of the night’s last train and the arrival of the morning’s first one, workers in rural Japan built an entirely new train station. It will replace a significantly bigger wooden structure that has served commuters in this remote community for more than 75 years. The new station’s components were 3D-printed elsewhere and assembled on site last month, in what the railway’s operators say is a world first. It may look more like a shelter than a station, but building one the traditional way would have taken more than two months and cost twice as much, according to the West Japan Railway Co.
As Japan’s population ages and its workforce shrinks, the maintenance of railway infrastructure, including outdated station buildings, is a growing issue for railway operators. Rural stations with dwindling numbers of users have posed a particular challenge. The new station, Hatsushima, is in a quiet seaside town that’s part of Arida, a 25,000-population city in Wakayama prefecture, which borders two popular tourist destinations, Osaka and Nara prefectures. The station, served by a single line with trains that run one to three times an hour, serves around 530 riders a day.
Times of India: India: Engaged with US for mutually beneficial trade deal
NEW DELHI: Amid global concerns about the fallout of US reciprocal tariffs, India reiterated on Wednesday that discussions are ongoing between Indian and US trade teams for the expeditious conclusion of a mutually beneficial, multi-sectoral bilateral trade agreement (BTA). India values its comprehensive global strategic partnership with the US and is committed to working closely with it, said the external affairs ministry. "India is carefully examining the implications of the various announcements made by the US. Govt of India remains engaged with all stakeholders and is assessing the situation by taking into account feedback from stakeholders including exporters and industry representatives," said ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal. Foreign minister S Jaishankar and his counterpart Marco Rubio had in a phone conversation this week agreed on the need for an early conclusion of the BTA, as the US seeks a "fair and balanced" trade relationship with India. The ministry expressed hope that similar agreements with the EU and UK will be finalised soon as well.

Beirut, Lebanon – Israel’s continuing attacks intend to keep its neighbours unstable, weak and fragmented, analysts say, and are contributing to the derailing of governing projects in Lebanon and Syria. Conversations with experts, analysts, and diplomats reveal a belief that Israel wants to keep the two states weak and fractured, maintaining Israel as the strongest regional power. “The Israelis believe that having weaker neighbors, as in states that aren’t really able to function, is beneficial for them because, in that context, they’re the strongest actor,” Elia Ayoub, writer, researcher, and founder of The Fire These Times podcast, told Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera: Russia-Ukraine war: List of key events, day 1,141
Kremlin Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Maria Zakharova accused Ukraine of continuing to attack Russian energy infrastructure daily, despite the mutually agreed 30-day moratorium on energy strikes.
Moscow’s Defence Ministry said Ukraine carried out four energy attacks on Ukraine in the past day. The Kremlin also accused Ukraine’s drones of attempting to strike a compressor station serving the TurkStream pipeline that sends gas from Russia to Turkiye via the Black Sea. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said talks with the United States on a minerals-for-security deal would take place next week.
Ukraine has finalised its position and developed its vision for a future minerals deal with the US, Kyiv’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said. The minister said Ukraine would soon finalise the composition of a delegation that would travel to Washington to discuss the agreement further.
Al Jazeera: Zelenskyy says at least 155 Chinese citizens fighting for Russia in Ukraine
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukrainian intelligence has information about 155 Chinese nationals fighting for the Russian military against Ukraine, and that the real number is likely to be much higher. Zelenskyy told reporters in Kyiv on Wednesday that Russia was recruiting Chinese citizens via social media and that Chinese officials were aware of the efforts. He added that Ukraine was trying to assess whether the recruits were receiving instructions from Beijing. “The ‘Chinese’ issue is serious. There are 155 people, with names and passport details, who are fighting against Ukrainians on the territory of Ukraine,” Zelenskyy said. “We believe that there are many more of them.”
Al Jazeera: Pope Francis meets King Charles, Queen Camilla during Vatican convalescence
Pope Francis met privately with King Charles III and Queen Camilla at the Vatican during the royal couple’s four-day state visit to Italy and on the occasion of their 20th wedding anniversary, the Vatican has announced. The British royals’ visit on Wednesday was the pope’s first known meeting since his return to the Vatican after five weeks in hospital for life-threatening double pneumonia. Francis had planned to have an audience with Charles, but the official state visit to the Vatican was postponed due to the pope’s health. The pope issued a new invitation for a private audience, but it was subject to his health and only confirmed on Wednesday morning. The mid-afternoon visit lasted about 20 minutes and included a private exchange of gifts. The Vatican statement said the pope wished Charles and Camilla a happy anniversary, and the king and queen in return wished the pope a speedy recovery.
Hope everyone has a great evening.
