White to move and mate in two #650 - Comet SWAN25F [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-04-08

Newly discovered comet SWAN25F is gracing the morning sky, although it requires a telescope and a good camera to capture images like this one, which was taken by comet hunter maestros Michael Jäger and Gerald Rhemann on April 6.

The comet does not have an official designation yet.

Perihelion will be around May 1.

Brightness is expected to peak around Mag 5. Will very likely continue to require a telescope for good viewing.

Imaged using an 11” telescope

Comet SWAN25F was discovered by the Solar Wind ANisotropies (SWAN) instrument (developed by LATMOS, France and the Finnish Meterological Institute) aboard the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO).

Here is the orbital diagram of comet SWAN25F.

It seems to have a steep inclination wrt the ecliptic.

It will be difficult to observe from the northern hemisphere near and after perihelion.
